1 litre for 1000 miles - Isn't it too much?

Featured Replies

I bought the car in April this year with 62k on the clock. Did around 4k since but it had managed to use 4 litres of oil since and I am just above the lower end again :(

Does this mean something really bad that will cost me a lot to fix?

Thanks,

Gabi

Diesel / petrol??

If its a 1.4 16v your probs looking at piston ring failure... Common fault!

Or if its a diesel fubard turbo oil seals?

check all gaskets eg rocker cover, sump plug could be a number of things best to start small rather that jumping to conclusions could cost you a lot of unnecessary pounds

It is the 1.4 16V

Is it something I habe to rush and fix or as long as I feed it with oil it survives for a while?

Probs piston ring failure...

Not too clued up on it but i know its a common fault...

Will req new piston rings if thats the problem.... Top end rebuilt...

Is there obvious oil coming from the exhaust??

I haven't seen any obvious leak or smoke coming out anywhere, hence I was not sure what it was.

The only other thing I noticed is the lack of power on uphill when fully loaded.

Also every now and then the revs drop a tiny bit and jump back to normal when I am at traffic lights, but it happens very rarely

Just

Put

Oil

In

It!

It's low mileage and the bores are glazed, it really doesn't matter because it's a only few pence extra on the running costs. I top up with bog standard 15W40 mineral oil, £12 for five litres and it lasts a good few months. Always run it on super unleaded and thrash it from time to time to keep the plugs and Catalyst clean.

If leakage of oil is not visible, suggest get the piston compressions checked at a garage, to claim/deny its a piston or piston ring problem.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

It does seem excessive oil loss on the face of it, and so many places the stuff get leak from.

Mine did this (amung many other bad things!) too. Just kept topping it up and it was fine.

My RX-8 seems to eat less oil than the Fabia though, and the 8 injects it as part of the combustion sequence! :D

Thanks everyone!

I will keep topping it up and save up for the visit to the mechanic when the MOT is due :S

1 litre per 600 miles is allowed but on an AUB/AUA engine as said piston ring issues cause excess crankcase pressure that forces oil back through the intake where it is burnt.
