Windows security issue? FIXED!

Featured Replies

My (work) laptop has been running W7 for about six months now and has been very stable. I have had no problems connecting to my home wireless either. It's been very reliable connecting to that.

In the past couple of weeks, the following problems have begun to happen.

- When I start up, MS Communicator starts up and shows all of my contacts online/offline status (and so must have connected to our Exchange server at work) but then asks for my credentials. I put in my password, and click "save" or "remember" but it keeps asking for the password. Often the dialog box pops up again immediately, sometimes after a few seconds. It might pop up 6 or 10 times before finally "accepting" credentials. The dialog box will pop up again at seemingly random intervals through the day.

- Outlook does the same; connects, downloads my emails, and then asks for credentials. The only difference is that it's not as persistant as the communicator.

- When connected to my home network, every 2 minutes or so the status of my wireless connection changes to "limited connectivity" even though it shows full signal strength. It will eventually re-establish on its own, but the quickest way is to click disconnect and then connect. It rejoins the network and works fine for another couple of minutes, and so on...... :swear:

This has all happened within roughly the same time frame, the last week or two. I smell a problem with Windows Security - or am I barking up the wrong tree.

BTW, AV software is McAfee, work-supplied, and up to date etc.....

IT department still :peek: and  and

Doesn't sound particularly serious or anything to worry about. More like a typical Windows wobble.

Your IT dept should be able to re-image the laptop quite quickly. That is probably the fastest fix. It can take forever to track down intermittent faults.

Could be an AV issue . Try disabling the AV and see what brings.

I'm not the only user suffering from this, but it seems I'm the worst affected/most vocal :giggle:

Plus all I get back from IT is a bog standard image of a Windows 7 laptop for an office user, not including all the engineering tools I have to install :dull: It'd be two days work to get all that back on again (and working properly).

Not serious but a MAJOR pain in the rear end.

In our corporate IT environment, disabling AV "ist verboten"!

Mine does this all the time, and I am IT! I think it is to do with the exchange server as it has only done it since being on win7. Communicator isn't problem as you can just click cancel but I am on outlook 2010 and keeps popping up with need password and you have to exit and re open outlook to get it to connect. It seems to happen after I have rdp'd to it from another machine.

All I can say is ask IT to make sure you have the latest communicator release and that office is fully patched. Other than that its probably an exchange issue.

When we first went to W7, we were still using Lotus Notes :o and I think Outlook was put on about four months ago. It's been absolutely fine until the last couple of weeks. Also seems strange that it coincides with my wireless LAN problems at home.:punch:

Corporate IT departments are like a huge ocean-going tanker.... plodding relentlessly and slowly in a given direction, impossible to stop or turn.:moon:

If the box pops up, it should have ****'s showing a password is stored. Just keep clicking OK.

Sounds like perhaps something in the background is stopping machine and server talking. Are you cabled or wifi? Sounds like a wifi channel issue.

No, it happens when I'm connected by cable through my docking station at the office, or on WiFi at home.

I haven't tried the laptop at home yet but the Outlook & Communicator issue seems to be resolved. I deleted all entries from the Credential Manager and it works fine now.

Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential Manager.

Ps Do this at your own risk! I accept NO responsibility for screwing up your pc.....
