alternator not charging

Featured Replies

My alternator is not charging. Battery voltage when running is 9 volts, regardless of revs (11 volts when turned off). The dynamo warning light came on yesterday driving along and now stays on all the time. Battery almost flat.

I have checked the two small wires (blue/brown?) down to the the join under the starter. There are no obvious breaks. They are certainly good down to the plug, I've tested them with a multimeter. I would like to test the full length of these wires, but don't know where they go and I'm not keen on snipping them just to test. I think they are blue and purple after the join. When I disconnect these wires, the dynamo warning light goes out, so wouldn't that suggest that these wires are fine? The main charge cable and earth look fine.

Would anyone have any suggestions? It's have a 1.4 16v petrol.

Thanks

Run over gearbox... Load sensor wire will be snapped

Causes alernator not to charge battery when below 1500rpm

If you get someone to rev over 1500rpm then it should charge batt

Rev it to 2000 RPM, if the alternator then starts to charge battery it's the load sense wire problem, if still no charge, new alternator required.

I have just tested it again, with a charged up battery. There is no charge from the alternator below or above 2000rpm. Took it up to 4000rpm, still nothing. So that looks like a broken alternator then.

Thanks for your replies.

Before you go out and change the whole alternator, try a new voltage regulator (inc brushes) that might cure it !
