OIL level after service

Featured Replies

Car just back from variable service and its above max level on dipdtick by a distance of min max again how critical is this ?

TIA

PS Fords do this evertime to the wifes tdci

Not good!

Overfilling can cause as much damage as running below the min mark.

Was the engine hot or cold when you checked the level? Just after switching off the oil will still be settling so this may show a high reading on the dipstick.

There are some different views on when its best to check the level, I think the manual recommends doing it when the engine is warm, I prefer to do it when it is cold as I think the reading is more accurate once all the oil has settled.

Either way I'd be taking it back to be checked out...

Engine was cold , does the oil bung need replacing everytime ?

Skoda handbook warns that an overfilled engine may posion the catalyst with oil.

I've never changed the oil on my Octavia myself, what do you mean by 'engine bung'?

Does the Octavia not have a threaded sump plug and brass washer? I have heard of dealers sucking the oil out through the filler but I am assuming the oil can still be drained using the traditional method of draining it out through a hole in the sump?

I prefer this method as if the oil is warm I reckon you are more likely to remove any debris with the oil and not leave any in the engine.

Let us know how you get on, a couple of mm's above MAX and I probably wouldn't loose any sleep but when you say it is the distance between MIN and MAX above the MAX mark again I'd be worried.

Its going back Monday morning I have seen the warnings , thanks for your replies

The genuine Skoda sump plug has a captive aluminium sealing washer, and the dealer should replace the whole plug and washer assembly each time. It's not expensive, and personally I would renew it each time.

You can re-use the whole assembly a few times and, with luck, the washer will stay good and it won't leak oil. Or you can cut off the used aly washer and replace it with a new soft alloy or copper one. Don't use an ordinary plain steel one - it won't seal.

The important thing is to torque the plug and washer up correctly. It's a steel plug in a soft alloy oil pan and will strip the thread in the pan quick as a wink if you go at it too hard. Too lose and it won't seal properly.

Sadly Skoda do this everytime to my 1.9Tdi.

Mine doesn,t burn any oil so the level is crucial.I always state "Please don,t overfill" and even stick a note on the dash covering the speedo, but they do it everytime. Its above the MAX hatched area and right up to the curl in the dipstick which as you said is another MIN - MAX length again.I,ve learnt now that i leave it there until its cool enough and check it and then go back in and tell them to drain it off.

No doubt i will be doing this on wednesday when it has another oil change :(

Bad news if overfilled. My mate is top VAG technicion and an apprentice at his garage overfilled a seat sump and the car engine blew on the after service test run.

Interestingly the Skoda garage in Cesky Krumlov knew better.

After the Service the Oil is only in the middle of the hatched bit on the dipstick.

Unlike Ford who insisted on overfilling the 1.9TDI in the Galaxy.

Ps

Her used no oil in the first 18,600 miles well only a "sniff", i.e. so little as to be of no signifence.

Will book it in at Cesky Krumlov local dealership next time.

[looks for passport]

Local garage said they put in 4.3 ltr and it was only 0.3 over the max they did drain to the correct level , so how come it was so far up the dipstick ????? I wonder...........

I Will have the same issue next month when the wifes Cmax goes to Fords for a service and they overfill that for the 3rd year in a row !

Whats not to like

The weather was hot.

the recption was warm.

&

the beer was cold.

(bloody lager mind!)

i.e. not proper beer

There is also a plate under the bonnet saying the same thing just by the bonnet latch.

I had a horror story of a National doing that on one of thier oil and filter offers advertised I stopped off at one on a long drive in Dumfries in my old 2.0 HDi and they did it I nipped off to cafe came back paid my cash did one was in no rush and driving for eco so very low revs doing about 55mph got to a big hill that evening after a ferry crossing and massive shuddering power died big time. when i got home i let it cool off that night it was 13cm above max! God know where all the oil went I drained it totally myself and got 6.7 litres out of car (excluding filter) they used one of those sucking out threw dip stick methods and when i called to give notice incase anything was damaged the lying scum said the person did nothing wrong and was supervised etc etc etc he said he was there and that car had bearly any oil in it and they put recommended amount in ... oil wasnt clean they failed to drain it all and added 4.5litres lol Tried to tell me that its a 2.0HDi thing the marks on dip sticks are all wrong and don't apply .........

Anyone in the area thinking of using the retarded scum place I would not recommend them.

Car survived the 190 miles drive after it as i was taking it so slow lucky me car still in the family and over 200000 miles on it today B)

Also 5 months ago had a main dealer overfill oil in my bike to top of sight window and say in response "thats just where we fill them to its fine" bike was running when collected then ran bad at higher revs when cooled found and went back"
