Self Service - the way to go?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

looking at self servicing the VRS this month. Brother in law who is a mechanic said he will show me the ropes for free and also replace my 312mm pads and discs for free also. Obviously i will have to buy the parts..

He stipulated it is as easy as pie and really the "problem" would be whether i wanted to get my book stamped..

I have decided to go self-service and attach all the receipts to the book and date and sign it for the record..

Surely this would suffice?

Car is 85k, 2006 model.....cant see why it should be taken to a mechanic garage...

Definitely the way to go, as you have said simply staple the receipts in abd away your go. As for the servicing itself, it really is easy and they only hard (annoying bit) for me is getting it on the Ramps lol

I did the last service on my Leon myself before I sold it, exactly as you said. Put the receipt from the goods in so buyers could see what parts were used, and signed/dated it as a self service. As long as I felt confident the seller knew what they were doing and that proper quality parts were used, it wouldn't put me off buying it so there's no real reason not to do it, particularly if you're planning on keeping the car yourself until it doesn't run anymore.

Well, the oil change is easy as long as you have easy access to the underside, as is replacing the brake pads/discs. :) Can't comment on the other replacement aspects, as I haven't had to do them yet. If you're going that route, might be worth the £40-80 for a fault code reader from Gendan, or similar. :)

As for resale ... it's swings and roundabouts - a self-serviced car might be the subject of neglect by some penny-pinching skinflint, or it might be a cherished possession of someone who doesn't trust a garage and does far more frequent inspections, etc.

I done all my own servicing on all my cars, the last one, an Octavia was sold within 3 hours of trading it in at a Skoda dealer.

Tbh i dont think it really matters unless its a ferrari

Brake pads/discs, oil change and filters changed are pretty simple to do just double check everything and you'll be fine.

Went to TPS to get my stuff to service the car this weekend £150 all in for:

Oil 5l

Dot 4 Brake Fluid 1l

Oil Filter

Air Filter

Fuel Filter

Pollen Filter

Front Discs

Front Pads

And i've had rear discs and pads sitting for a while ready to go on! :)
