my new Superb Combi

Featured Replies

Replaced a 2002 BMW 525 Auto Tourer with a new Superb Elegance 1.8TSI DSG Estate in June. Car is now 3 months old and has covered 3700 mls. I gained a lot from the forum when choosing the Superb so hope the following will help prospective purchasers.

Spec - I chose the elegance spec in steel grey,Luna wheels, plus front PDC, electric tail gate, wood trim, spare wheel and dealer floor mats.

Dealer - I purchased the car from James at Allams of Epsom who gave me the best deal. Although a 100mls from me this proved a good experiance and the Superb was superb in every way. Well done to James.

I have just returned from a 1500 ml tour in Germany and France, saw quite a few German combi's, and was able to put the car through its paces.

Likes:

Build quality

Looks nice in this colour and the Luna's suit the car and are easy to clean

Comfortable seats and nice cabin.

Drives very smooth and rides better than the BMW, less thumping on rough roads although perhaps feels slightly less planted at high speeds.

Surprisingly quick, when pushed.

DSG box is smooth and changes are fast however some reservations, see dislikes.

Boot is great and brought back loads of wine from my trip.

Car has averaged 37.2mpg according to the MFD. About what I expected.

Dislikes:

Low quality carpets.

Colombus - Not as intuitive on Nav as my old portable Garmin. Funny idea not being able to switch the radio/media off.

DSG - Probably the only major dislike. I have driven torgue convertor auto's for many years which of course tend to drag and sap fuel consumption therefore I think DSG is the way forward. However it has a major flaw when reversing on a steep slope. I parked on such a slope with a wall in front and someone parked behind me leaving quite a tight gap to manouvre. The car reversed OK under power but as soon as I lifted off the throttle, ran forward and I had to use the handbrake to assist. It also does it if you are going forward on a steep slope and lift off the gas. I have read other similar comments on the forum so assume this is a normal trait of DSG. Perhaps it can be programmed out? Bit of a bugger if you have a steep drive at your home.

Overall I think the car is great and lives up to expectations. Wonder if I should contact Skoda about the DSG.

SHould have gone for the diesel, our driveway is quite steep and I reverse my Superb up it with no problem, even on tick over. My wife has an Octavia 1.8TSI with DSG and that is awkward to reverse up the drive, the engine torque is not low down enough, drive the car in and its fine
