VRS Clutch Problem

Featured Replies

The car is an 08 VRS PDEstate with 42000 miles on the clock, 6 months out of warranty.

Last Friday the carwent into local dealer to have its injectors changed curtsey ofSkoda.

On picking the car upthe clutch felt a little strange, which I initially put down todriving different cars, but next morning I discovered that the clutchpedal was sticking, but could be moved to normal rest position bypulling the pedal up with my foot. With the pedal in normal restposition you have to press the pedal about an inch before the clutchstarted acting. Otherwise the clutch appears to be operatingnormally, can change gear without problem and no sign of clutch slip.

After furtherinvestigation I found that the rod at the back of the pedal thatconnects to the master cylinder was lose and not connected to thepedal, this explained the dead spot on the clutch.

I assumed that the rodshould be connected to the pedal and this had come undone or hadbroken and should be an easy fix..... However after visiting thedealer I have been told that nothing is missing or broken at the backof the pedal and the reason for the dead spot was that the mastercylinder was not retuning to normal rest position.....

The dealer doesn't knowif the problem is due to a fault in the master cylinder or in theslave.

It has been suggestedthat we replace the master cylinder first to see if that cures theproblem. If not the slave will have to be replaced, but that livesinside the gearbox, replacement means removal of the box and ofcourse if you do that you should consider replacement of clutch plateand flywheel £££££££!

Has any one else hadthis problem? Any comments about the diagnosis?

Anybody able to offer advice on my clutch problem?

In a nutshell the linkage from the master cylinder is not coming out far enough to touch the foot pedal at rest.

Clutch working OK but freeplay at top of pedal

Garage tell me nothing is broken or missing, thus must be the master cylinder piston that is not coming out far enough.

They suggest replacement of master cylinder first, then if that does not work slave.

Could it just need bleeding? Brake fluid was replaced earlier this year at last service.

If the plastic rod is not attached to the pedal its fooked!!

That is what I thought, but the dealer tell me that nothing is broken or missing there.

Anyone got a schematic of the master cylinder/clutch pedal?

Done quite a few of them, there is a ball on the end of the master cylinder that breaks off. There is a white plastic clip that goes around the ball then clips into te back of the pedal, not very complicated.

Good thing is its not difficult to replace, the whole clutch pedal box comes out in one bit once the pipes and clutch switch are disconnected in the engine bay.

Tech1e,

thanks for this, if the ball has broken off then I think that would explain my symptoms. Looking with a mirror I can see a white plastic clip on the back of the pedal, but there is no ball on the end of the push rod - I assume this is where it should be.

When you say not difficult to replace, is that just the push rod or the whole master cylinder?

Thanks

Alan

The whole master cylinder, it should really be all one bit.

OK thanks for that....

I have the exact same problem with my clutch pedal.

You can actually remove the pedal without disconnecting any of the hoses but itis tricky which is why i have not done it. You will have the ball on the end ofthe rod you just cant see it because it’s clipped into the white housing, when you see it you will know why there is no chace of it braking off.

I did have a look at mine when it first started happening but could not bearsed to go through all that hassle. The pedal is a nightmare to put back in.

They have the same pedals as most audi's and in my old A3 the weld that holdsthe white plastic clip broke and the master cylinder rod came through the otherside leaving me stranded. It's a common problem as they are a week weld. Not a lot you can do about it without changing the pedal.

Hope this helps
