Continental Driving-Headlight Adjustment

Featured Replies

Well, it was on here a few years back, I think I saved it in my favourites web page. I've since had to "neuk" the machine and all that is gone.

If (as I said above) you look at where the lamp fits (some call it a bulb but bulbs grow in gardens), there is a lever that moves (fingers won't budge it, a screwdriver is required), it's just a case of suck-it and see. If it moves Job Done, if not, wrong one.

If you like, take a picture and send it to me, we can then talk and I can point you in the right direction.

Hi Wayne. Finally got round to pulling out a light unit to get a picture. What am I looking for? Or do I have to take off the transparent cover?

Geep, I don't recall having a plastic cover on mine but, nevertheless remove it.

Look for the main lamp (mine is under a rubber boot) there a 3 cables on a plug connecting the lamp, remove the plug.

Where the lamp fits to the housing there will be a long(ish) lever on the side, this is the left-right adjustment is. It will only go one way. it's quite stiff but be firm with it.

Bingo.

That looks to me as though your car is fitted with factory fitted xenon headlights? In which case unless you have Maxidot you won't be able to flatten the beam manually.

Isn't that the ballast and ignitor under the clear plastic cover? This needs to come out before you can reach the xenon bulb...

You can flatten the pre-facelift xenon headlights, same way as the halogen ones.

Remove that clear cover, the ballast and the bulb and adjust the lever as mentioned above, I did it on mine a few times.

The maxidot 'tourist mode' option is only on facelift cars with maxidot and xenons.

Hope the weather is good in Watford tomorrow, then we'll all know what version we're talking about

Finally got around to doing this. I used this workshop guide page (http://workshop-manuals.com/skoda/octavia-mk2/vehicle_electrics/electrical_system/lights_lamps_switches_outside/headlights_with_xenon_discharge_lamps/headlights_with_xenon_discharge_lamps_up_to_my_08/convert_headlight_for_left-hand/right-hand_traffic/).

However, it is wrong for the left lamp. The switch is behind the hole in latticed plastic piece as shown, it is on the other side. At least I hope it is the manual that is wrong and not that I have an incorrectly manufactured light unit.

I'll test it when it gets dark to see if the beam is now flat.

Thanks for all the help.

Hi all, at the moment I have a Euro set lights, needed because I had to move to the Netherlands for a while.

As I am a Dutchman, I also had to put the car on Dutch reg for the time being, all about the money, lol.

Tax is insane here, about a 1000% of the UK road tax.

For some reason my landlord threw out my UK set.

Now the UK set where the lights with the lenses and I could indeed switch them to flat.

The lights which I have now don't have the lens, but seems these can't be switched too flat.

My Octavia is a MK2 Classis 2005.

Seems with these lights I will need to put the flipping stickers as I need to go the the UK next week.

I am in a similar situation, UK RHD car now in France and I changed to LHD headlights (RH dipping) like you did.

I also did a HID conversiona nd initially till I had made a compromise with the beam height I would get flashed by oncoming drivers, it happens no more in France but I visited the UK last weel and expected to get flashed.

To my surprise I wasn't, perhaps because in the past I have been laden, this time not so much, had I been flashed I would simply have lowered the beams using the dashboard adjustment, its all I ever did for the last 14 years with the MK1.

My advice is dont use the stickers, they make forward visibility very dangerous, there is more than enough adjustment with the dashboard control to drop the beam sufficiently.

I did have my old set of UK headlights but have just passed them on to another forum member.

Hi J.R. thank you very much for your response.

I was at a German VAG dealer yesterday late afternoon, he did set the lights as "flat" as possible.

This sounds as I drove for hours, but I live less than a mile from the German border, lol.

When back in the UK, I will need to find a set for UK, as the car will be reimported in the UK, that will be the North of Ireland.

The stickers are indeed not the best option, but indeed set them as fully in low position will probably do best, well, as an alternative, lol.

Gumtree, some local wreckers and eventual eBay will sort it out for me, lol.

By the way, having experience with both the lights with lenses as well as the lesser advanced, my opinion are that the lights without lenses a far better experience.
