Musty smell and condensation

Featured Replies

Over the last week or so I've noticed a musty smell in the car when I get in each morning, and the windscreen has condensation over it.

Last night I decided to lift the carpet in each footwell, but all were dry.

I then lifted out the spare wheel and found a little water in the well, not even enough to cover the whole bottom, just a few mm here and there.

Would that be enough to cause the smell and condensation? Would the rear window not steam up instead of the front as its closer to the source?! I know that other folk have had significantly more water in the well, Im assuming I have just maybe caught it in the early stages?

I found water in my spare wheel well, on Fabia, rear washer pipe popped apart, and the washer water ran down into wheel well.

Check rear washer is working and pipe connection.

Pollen filter maybe?

Would it not put water into the footwells? It happened to my Bora many moons ago.

I would go with a damp pollen filter , remove it for a day or two and see if this improves the situation ,the water in the boot won't help

does the water in the boot smell of screen wash ?

I'd start with the pollen filter as well. Even if it's not saturated enough to allow water into the footwell, if it's a couple of years old it won't be at its best anyway and may well have absorbed moisture during that time.

They're under a £10 from the dealer, so well worth changing. Will improve the efficiency of the HVAC system anyway.

I would have said door seals, but you said you lifted the carpets. I found out mine are leaking after getting back to my car from a two week hol. When i opend the door i could see water going over the top of the door seal and into the car. (sill area)

I was just starting to get this problem on mine and my Pollen Filter was 2 years old so i replaced it and all is well

Think I prob need to change my pollen filter, can someone remind me where it is and how easy it is to change?

Easy to change - just pop the plastic cover between the windscreen and the engine bay off (by the wiper arm) and you will see the filter sitting there. It is on the passenger side

Between the windscreen and the engine bay? Are you sure, on a Mk2?

On mine anyway, and every other Mk2 I've seen, the Pollen filter is under the glovebox - need to slide a panel to the side and it drops out.

Good deal on genuine ones here. You can send them your chassis number too in advance, and they'll confirm compatibility: http://goo.gl/7kiwr

Strangely my car has been grand this past few days, and that's with rain and me using the rear washer.

If the pollen filter is only a tenner from the dealer, I suppose it wouldn't do any harm to change it anyway.

So Wardy you change it from inside the car??

Yes, that's why I was confused by the earlier post. Unless it's being confused with a Mk1?

If you go under the glovebox you can see the area that slides, and the pollen filter is housed above that. Best to have newspaper or a covering down in the footwell, as the filter can often drop straight down, and is usually a bit grubby - along with debris and leaves :)

Right, I'll check both places! Though I've got a feeling it'll be behind the glove box...

Check under the glovebox first ;)

Roger wilco!

Edit: also, where's my chassis number so I can contact that ebay seller? :)

Easiest place to grab it is underneath the tax disc. From the outside, look at the bottom right-hand corner of the windscreen and there's a little window built in there that shows it emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Or if you have a VCDS scan saved somewhere (maybe!) it's listed at the top, and you can just cut & paste :)

I do have a scan from when Simbo sorted stuff for me, hooray!

Is the pollen filter the same regardless of Octavia model?

I plan to pick 1 up from the dealers this week (it's only circa £10), and I stabbed a few holes in the bottom of the boot seal at the weekend to let any water drain out rather than into the boot.

Fingers crossed that's the end of it!

According to the details in the ebay link Wardy posted earlier in the thread, no.

I fired off an email last week to the seller with my VIN to see if it would fit, not had a response yet though...

It was my dealer who told me they were all the same, he didn't ask what model my Octavia was.

That link only offers free mainland postage sadly, but the dealer is only £10 anyway.

I'd thought they were the same too... until I saw that eBay link. Unless it's then making absolutely certain for people, so that they can't come back and say it wasn't compatible....
