Steel wheels

Featured Replies

My new steel wheels and Avon Ice Touring tyres arrived today from MyTyres. Not sure if I'll want to get some wheel trims to go on them though. Has anyone got a photo of a blue Octavia (preferably a VRS) with black steel wheels on for me to have a look at, as I won't be fitting the wheels until the weather gets a lot colder.

Can you post a picture of your tyre / wheel (unfitted!). Thinking of getting something similar from mytyres, but they dont really have a picture of the steel wheel on their website that i can see.

Can you tell me what wheels and tyre combination you went for? I rang mytyre today and they were spectacularly unhelpful!

I went through the selector on thier site for Steel Wheels with Winter tyres, which came up with a 16 inch 5 x 112.00 x 57.00 ET: 50.00 wheel. I'll do a test fit one evening to make sure they really are the right size before it's too late to change them if there is a problem.

I went for the Ice Touring ST as while they're not the best they get reasonable reviews and are around £50 a corner cheaper than the top end tyres. Tyres size is 205/55 R16 91H, which is only a fraction of a percent out from the 225/40 R18 I've got on at the moment.

I'll try and remember to get a photo of a wheel tonight.

Wheel Trims? - Please for the love of God reconsider!

Black wheels look cool in a US Police Interceptor kind of way but wheel trims on an Octy VRS would be a huge mistake!

The exact combo I've been looking at. The Avons have got some decent reviews and seem to he good value

As awhitham says there's no picture of the wheels available on the site so I didn't even know what colour I was going to get. I thought about wheel trims for silver wheels but I reckon black might look ok.

The one thing that worries me slightly was the claim on another thread that we need 57.1 rather than 57 for the hole in the middle, hence me wanting to do a test fit in the near future.

Wheel trims look dreadful and if you drive in snow this will just clog behind the trims causing balancing issues until it thaws and/or causing problems when melting. Just get some VW Caddy van centre caps.

Have a look at this thread post #46:

http://briskoda.net/...or-not-to-trim/

If you have mytyre steel wheels note that the larger Caddy centre caps won't fit as the mytyre steel wheels are too "dishy". Only the ones in post #46 above will fit. Just get some Škoda badges from eBay to cover the VW logo. Someone in the Yeti forum sourced these Caddy caps this week from a VW dealer for £6,49 plus VAT each. Even cheaper than eBay.

Finished work early today (love offsite meetings) so had time for a test fitting of a wheel.

The question I just logged on to ask has has been preempted by 900000, a set of those centre caps will do the job nicely.

The steel wheels don't look too bad! When you look at the alloys on mytyres though (not massively more than steels) I found a confusing comment. What on earth does "not if OE is minimum 17 inch" mean? (I have a VRS currently on 18" alloys)

Rim: Enzo - R Silver

Measurements:

7.00J x 16 OS 50 mm

Number of holes / Bolt circle:

5 / 112.00 mm

Special features:

not if OE is minimum 17 inch

That looks not too bad at all!

I did the same last year and bought a set of steels with goodyear winter tyres from mytyres, i looked at wheel trims but in the end just went for the caddy centre caps. Got them from my local VW dealer, cost 20 quid and took a couple of days to arrive. Look fine and did a great job of protecting the wheel nuts and centre hub.

I'm pretty sure this means the 16" alloys will not fit if the Original Equipment specs 17" minimum size http://ww1.briskoda.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/emoticon-0100-smile.gif

Minimum on a VRS is 16" due to the size of the front discs. Other Octavias can take a 15". The first post of the Winter Tyres thread is well worth a read for wheel size info.

Thank God you've given up the idea of wheel trims - saves me a call to the Style Police!

Looking good!

black steel looks good as it is IMO, doesn't need a trim or centre cap.

looks like you've got a good deal of ground clearance there too..

:p

I think the centre cap's worth it to protect the bolts and the hub, but also as I'd rather thave a black hub cover than silver bolts on a black wheel.
