Got my hands on the MX5 at the weekend.

Featured Replies

Different proportions I guess?

Either way, hope you continue to enjoy it.

My Wife's MX5 has the foam/rubber armrest and the chrome trim on the heater controls (although this can easily be removed). I think the first owner spec'd all the extras they could find, illuminating gear knob, sports grill, body kit, Bose ICE with ipod connection, etc etc.

Illuminating gear knob...

:oB)

Time to get looking I think.

Got any pics of that at all mate?

The RX-8 also had this feature as an option when it came out. It was quickly discontinued as it got too warm too touch!!! Maybe they did not use LEDs in those days? :giggle:

Seriously, don't start looking for modifications. You'll be sorry! There's more stuff available for '5s than pretty much any other model of car I've ever seen....

The amount for NA and NB is staggering, but then they have had plenty of time to think stuff up! But the NC's been out for a good while now.

Look - if you dare ;)

I've already been having a nose. There's lots available in the US

I've noticed. Previous owner seems to have already added lots

of chromed bits, front and rear low profile colour matched

mudflaps, armrest, chrome filler cap, etc etc. I didn't plan to

change anything but an illuminated gearknob :o Where do I sign? :D

I used to have a Raid illuminated gearknob on my Golf GTI.

Tacky and gash to some maybe. But I loved it and everybody

who got in after dark commented positively.

I had mine wired up to the handbrake switch that illuminated

the little icon in the instument pod.

It was wired in so that when the handbrake was on the gearknob

light was off and the dash icon was lit and vice-versa.

It lit up blue when I got it but I modded it with a small

piece of green carrier bag so that it lit up the same colour

as the in car illumination. Was a really good match actually.

It was still on the car and working fine when I sold it :(

I really am going to try and resist the urge to muck about

with this car too much. :p

We'll hold you to that! I've quoted it, so it's now set in stone :p

Especially when they might not want there third tampering with :p

TBH "they" wouldn't have a clue as long as it's not a visual mod :D

Great looking car mate!!

Will give you years of great motoring

It was a set of pics I put together when my wife was trying to sell the car privately (it is now being traded in). A lot of the stuff you wouldn't even know is an extra unless you compare it against a base spec car, things like white lenses for indicators and third brake light.

Little update.

Checked the air filter at the weekend.

Discovered a K&N inside the box.

Thought it sounded a little rorty... B)

Took it out for the first time in the wet as well.

Turns out the Accelera Alpha tyres on it were bloody awful.

They were pretty good in the dry but the mother in law had

a few hairy moments last week in the rain and after a

drive in the wet on Sunday, although I coped okay with them,

I can see why they scared the mother in law.

Shame as they all had a good 6mm + of tread on them.

They're in the bin now :D

They have been replaced with 4 new Falken ZE912s in the short

term. I have them on both Fabias and am happy enough with

their performance versus how much they cost, we'll see how they

get on on the MX5. :wonder:

I'll put something better on next year if necessary.

TBH it doesn't get abused much (Only when I drive it ;) )

So the Falkens should be sufficient to keep the girls facing

the way they are travelling when they are driving it.

Personally I don't mind if the back end can be easily provoked

that's the idea isn't it? :D

Just a note on tyres after 12k miles the original set on SWMBO car had started to crack even thought the tread depths were still legal. The guy at the MOT testing station said he was seeing more and more cars with this issue. The problem being too much exposure to sunlight. I know we get some great weather up here in Scotland but really?!? Then we had a look at where the car is normally parked and sure enough direct sunlight for a couple of hours for quite a few days of the year. So even if you do not do many miles in the car make sure you park it out of the sun or you could be in for new rubber sooner than you think.

Looks very nice, I miss mine :(

Was a 02 plate Ltd edition with lsd etc. Great I loved going out in the rain with the hood down, over 40 the rain is carried away, thus one stays dry. :D

Or this time of year when it's chilly, lowest was -6; heated seats, gloves and a warm coat :D

Lovely memories.

She's booked in next Thursday for full geometry setup at what seems

to be the best place in the land for setting up MX5s.

Wheels in motion

More or less everything I've read on the subject this place

is mentioned favourably. I'm just not convinced that it's been

done properly in the past and Watford from Bristol seems like an

excuse for a nice drive out. B)

The Monday after that she's going in to the Spray shop for the

bumper respray (and someones already kerbed one of the alloys which they

are also sorting out... Wasn't me  )

Ooooo Gary! You discovered rear wheel drive :thumbup:

Re-discovered more like LOL

1st car was a V reg Mark 2 Escort 1.3L.

2nd car - X reg Mark 5 Cortina 2.0GL

3rd car - C reg Sierra Estate 1.6GL

4Th car - D reg Sierra Estate 1.8GL

5th car - G reg Sierra Hatchback 1.6LX

It's been FWD ever since.... :smirk:

You'll love the MX5 on the track, tail out on the corners, woo hoo!

  • 9 months later...

You have the same opinion as me Sonner wanted to back to toyota for years since I had a Yaris T Sport when they came out and that was a little beast and such fun to drive. Rwd is ok as I rally a 170bhp Hillman Avenger and the other half is handy behind the wheel. Yeh the facelift models had a few tweeks and an lsd also. Think I am due a midlife crises next year lol

Still like grr666 5 thou DOH

Graeme

The have LSD included? I'm in! :)

Thats a nice looking 5 you have got there. I have had two NB first then the original and best, NA  . Awesome cars put a smile on your face on the most mundane drive. My dad has got my old NB now so at least i could have a blast if i wanted. Here is a link to some pics of my Mk1

It's gone now. The thing was the wife wouldn't drive it as we bought it

with her recently deceased mum. Too many memories I guess.

Sold a few weeks ago to a lad in Clifton.

He got a very nice car for what he paid.

(He kerbed an alloy backing out of the drive though)

Got the wife in a nice little bright yellow Fiat 500 now.

She likes it a lot and has named it Daisy. It's nice to see her smiling again.

Loving yours by the way... Pop up headlights Mmmmmmm B)

I've got a Mk1 - fantastic little car for the money although not fast! It has an agility and tactile feel absent in most cars.

Although if you can live with less practicality and have the funds, it's an Elise every day for me as it takes driver involvement to the next level.

Elise is an interesting one, as they can be bloody hard to live with! And you have to prepare for things to go wrong.

And the roof, especially on the Mk1 is a pain in the neck...

Drives well though :)

As an owner, you may disagree on the points raised though....

I personally think they make a much better second car but way more practical than a 7.

Things rarely go wrong, certainly not on the four I've had anyway. Running costs are pretty low, ball joints, wheel bearings, bushes and track rod ends tend to wear more than normal cars especially with sticky tyres, new rad is a front clam removal and the K will have HGF at some point.

Insurance is low, mpg usually around 40 due to lack of weight, loads of cheaper specialists and of course many engine bits are cheap as its a common platform engine.

Add in zero depreciation or likely appreciation on S1's and you have a sensible buy!
