Has Total Shut Down?

Featured Replies

Chesterfield used to have many Total filling stations. They all seem to be Texaco now, much to my surprise, after returning from France. Any link with the responsibility for the Buncefield explosions and fire?

Getting marginally better mpg with the Texaco diesel and the petrol (in BMW bike).

There are 3 Total stations within a couple of miles of my house in Guiseley. Couldn't tell you where the nearest Texaco is!

haven't seen anything other than sheee / BP / Supermarket in ages

coverage seems very variable for the various brands

There's a Total across the road from my office and another one off junction 2 of the M5, sure there's others round the Midlands too, just can't remember exactly where off the top of my head...

Nothing's happening with Total UK operations AFAIK. And their site lists three Chesterfield sites? Maybe that's old info.

Could it be that some local sites have just swapped franchises, from one fuel brand to another?

Competition from local supermarkets is more likely the cause of their disappearance.

If you've got an ASDA, Tesco/Tesco Extra, Sainsbury's etc nearby they'll undercut the local independent retailer by a long way.

All the total petrol stations in the UK were recently bought by the Heron corporation, Heron had a large chain of service stations in the 1970s and 80s which they sold off and the remainder were re branded Snax 24.

Filled up at a Total this morning

???

As an aside, and If I recall correctly, Fina's (remember them?) operations in the UK were merged with Total sometime in the 90s and the Fina name quietly disappeared as their sites were rebranded.

Oh, & there's a Total less than a mile from my home near Guildford so unless nobody's told them, Total still seem to be doing business in the UK.. :-)

Elf got swallowed up by Total at the same time, Mobil sites went over to BP in the UK, but i have not seen a Gulf station for a long time.

Elf got swallowed up by Total at the same time ..

Indeed they did - I think the mother company was actually called TotalFinaElf for a while to reflect the component parts of the operation.

..gets anorak, leaves..

Like giving a woman a driving licence & a kid a hand grenade... That's plain wrong. :D

Ha! I'd trust my son with a hand grenade more than I'd trust SWMBO with one..

As for the driving licence, the jury's out..

Thanks guys. Must just be a coincidental local change of franchises. I was thinking the guilty parties ,Chevron/Total ,were saving the pennies for the big payout of legal fees.

Whatever happened to Q8?

Whatever happened to Q8?

According to Wikipedia..

"There are no more Q8 Petroleum stores in the UK, after being bought out in 2004 by a joint venture company Refined Holdings which was formed specifically for the sale. The Q8 brand has since then been phased out of the UK."

Cheers. The question just came to mind, when other companies were mentioned that have since disappeared too.

It always fascinates me to discover where once household names have gone to. Either merged with sister companies or re-branded to suit global marketing 'harmonisation' (eg Norwich Union/Aviva).

Superseded company logos are always interesting when you catch them in print or on TV - the old-style BP shield on Michael's garage in I'm Alan Partridge is a good one - along with the 79p per litre unleaded price board.. :-(

I always remember National and their campaign service with a smurf when I was a nipper.

My local garage went from Shell to BP to Texaco in 2 years. Why do we still call them garages when they sell petrol and overpriced food but don't fix cars?

There is a Total in Kirkstall leeds and its just had a re-fit with new pumps etc.

Because it's easier than saying a 'fuel and food retailer' ?? ;)
