VRS Gearbox recon / replace & prices?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Oh dear, garage has told me my gearbox has an internal problem - needs taken off for a recon - symptoms are particularly notchy gear selection and grinding to put it into reverse -this gets worse as gearbox warms up, to the point that out of mechanical sympathy, I turn the engine off, engage reverse then turn on again.

The clutch does seem ok - pulls strong, low biting point. Mechanic reckons something up inside the box.

So I could use some opinions on what my best course of action would be.. - sending the box off for fault finding seems a bit open ended in terms of price, but probably looking at £6-700 pounds at least, before fitting.

Anybody know the going rate for a recon / 2nd hand box and where I could source one?

Much obliged

Low biting point...... It sounds like the clutch is dragging to me, not going into reverse also sounds like clutch not clearing the flywheel.

As a starting point I'd want to bleed the clutch hydraulics.

Put it this way, if you didn't depress your clutch to the floor you'd get exactly the symptoms you have.

Yes, this totally makes sense... I'll search in here of how to bleed the hydraulics. Thanks.

Low biting point points towards a problem with the slave cylinder. Clutch should be bled using a pressure bleed system & not pumping the clutch pedal. I would also advise changing the gearbox fluid with genuine VAG fluid, & making sure the gear selector is set up correctly.

Hi - thanks - what I meant about the "low" biting point was that it's not high, as in the end of the pedal's travel. I don't thinks it's truly low as in abnormally low, feels just right to me, sorry for the confusion.

I set up the gear selector alignment last night after searching the forum... unfortunately didn't help it.

What do you think regarding the reverse gear selection being worse when warm? Oil replace might help, but seems to being getting worse in a quicker time frame than oil would be degrading, if you see what I mean.

If the slave was an issue there would be leaking fluid, master cylinder or air in the system would be my guess if its hydraulic related

Mine does that if i dont press pedal far enough to floor or if i put it in reverse while still rolling forward
