Thats a bargain! Look awesome, shame they are not on an Octy. :(

Am starting to regret buying steelies now.

Might have to trim them...

Where's that argos catalogue..?

No, no, no, don't do it!!

Gave the car a quick steam rinse this afternoon then thought I would take a couple of pics of my winter wheels on my phone for you lovely people. Note the near criminal 100% lack of beadage on the car!!! This will need to be addressed after the winter I fear :( Really not fussed on having different wheels for winter and I really didn't like the look of these Audi ones in the shop but the deal was good (cheaper than steelies) and when on the car I think they look dead on!

My bags arrived today but they aren't Skoda branded - apart from that they are identical to Fubars.

Bit gutted they haven't got the Skoda Logo but can't complain for £24.

Hi, I'm just wondering if my normal alloy wheel bolts from my Mk1 VRS will fit steel wheels?

Yes they use the same bolts.

Phew thanks Gizmo - thought I may have mis-calculated there!

I got the complete wheel and tyre set from mytyres.co.uk - I'd read that official Skoda steel ones are OK, but does that apply to the mytyres wheels?

The standard bolts are radiused. Some aftermarket wheels need tapered bolts. Take a look at the wheel and you'll see what type of bolt you need, or just offer up one of your bolts and see if it seats properly in the wheelt_bolttypes.jpg

This isn't too bad looking is it? Not as good as the original 17" alloys that now sleep in the garage. But better than the naked black steel I feel.

They are Skoda supplied 16" 6.5J wheels shod with Dunlop winter rubber and…Halfords 16" plastic wheel trims.

I might still hunt for some 'winter alloys' or is it not worth the hassle now that I know I've got something that fits and doesn't disturb the insurance company…

I see and appreciate the benefits of winter wheels and tyres.

I just couldn't bare under-wheeling either my Scout or my vRS.

Function over form should always take priority when it comes to grip on winter roads but I just couldn't fit 16" wheels for upto 6 months of every year.

Plastic wheel trims should be banned too, at least with black steel wheels you are hinting that you have winter wheels on.

Halfords plastic trims look like someone has nicked your alloys and you've had to replace them with steelies!

6 months??? Where the hell do you live? I had mine on 3 months last year.

Peope are putting winter tyres on now. It's early November.

Winter tyres are recommended for temperatures below seven degree's celcius.

The average temperature across the UK during April this year was 6.3 degree's celcius, with some places as low as 2.5 degree's celcius.

November, December, January, February, March and April = 6 months.

And I did say up to 6 months.

From Volkswagen's UK website which also suggests 6 months can be the norm...

"Winter tyres are designed to work when the temperature drops to 7C and below. The tread design and compound formulation are better than summer tyres at these temperatures, so they improve grip, traction, handling and braking. The Met office state the average temperatures between October and March are generally below 7C therefore it makes perfect sense to fit winter tyres."

Yes from the link you posted to Horton's :)

I haven't put mine on yet! I need 3 new tyres on the 18's so wearing them down and will replace over winter.

I usually put them on towards the end of Nov and take off Mid March.....4 Months.

And that's 4 months of safer driving, no danger of kerbing my 18's, £80 vs £150 for replacement tyres if i get a puncture, 4-6k of miles that aren't wearing my 18's down and finally grit free, corrosion free 18's.

I haven't put mine on yet!

But several others on here have. Assuming they also leave theirs on until the end of March / early April that's 6 months.

If all-season tyres are becoming popular as mentioned earlier then these may offer the best mix of grip without spoiling the look of the car for half the year?

Although I'm guessing a set of all-season 18" fatter and lower profile tyres on the standard rims aren't going to perform as well in deep snow...

And defeat the object of all the other reasons i put a different set of wheels on my car for the bad months......

Mine doesn't actually look too bad with them on if not slightly taxi like :giggle:

Plastic wheel trims shouldn't be banned. That is probably a little extreme. There is enough unnecessary legislation already!

Halfords plastic trims just look exactly like all other makes, including OEM. Silver. Trims. Made of plastic. Sold by people who don't always know what they're talking about as opposed to people who don't always know what they're talking about but want to make you feel like you don't know what you're talking about. (Dealers!)

Black wheels only hint to a few people in the know that you have winters. The vast majority of motorists would think you'd had you alloys nicked and had to replace them with steelies!

I take your point though but the car just looked too black, being black already. A silver car with black wheels doesn't look half as bad but at the end of the day, it's all in the eye of the beholder.

Funny really, it grows on you over the season and then it's a real pleasure to get the alloys back on in the spring!

Oops. Sorry for the double post. Computer said the first was didn't go through due to 'flood control' so I shortened it and then saw I'd duplicated it in error.

I may need to put some tyre dressing on, what do you think?

I'd love to see them on your vRS!

It's just me, I don't actually mind wheel trims to be fair, but I do hate the cheaper non-OEM trims.

I have an eye for detail and can spot them a mile away. I know OEM trims are stupidly expensive but I think I'd rather pay it than go for a set of Halford's specials.

What doesn't help with the Scout is the dark grey plastic wheel arches, this exagerates the gap between the wheel and the bodywork so winters on a Scout look pretty bad!

Like I mentioned earlier though we all have different priorities, I get the benefits of winter tyres but I think I'd look to fit a set to my exisitng wheels so that I could avoid the 'something ain't right with that car' look.

I have steel wheels and last winter I had "Aldi" special wheel trims on (£10) and they didn't look too bad except that the wire that holds the trims on has corroded rather badly in one winter. I switched and bought the VW Caddy trims this year and it looks fine and they clip on really tightly ( even over the locking wheel nut).
