Cooper S-like handling?

Featured Replies

When you say cupra do u mean the cupra petrol or diesel?

How would I obtain the bushes etc, do I hav to go through seat?

Ali at Unit 18 did mine for me. But apas the standard ones fail alot quicker than uprated ones due to poor design, luckily i changed mine when i did because they were starting to split. It does stiffen it up at the front abit too.

Pzero's are good tyres

Ferrari uses them so can be that bad, think they use the pzero rosso

So tyres are good, if it's got all four corners on Pirelli Pzero Nero's then you probably have a well loved car with a previous owner that didn't skimp on stuff.

time for the Remap and RARB then get back to us.

I'm not going to get into some big argument but there is a big difference between handling, dynamics and grip.

Yes adding stiffer roll bars, lower suspension etc can help (when done properly) the speed you can take corners or how sharp the car may feel. But thats not dynamics.

You still have a flexing chassis and a setup fundamentaly desisned not to be sporty. By that I mean the fixed position of various suspension arms, the centre of gravity, you name it. Sporting intentions, this car had none.

Add aftermarket suspension then go down a country lane with serious conviction and you will soon learn the car has no dynamic ability.

To be fair though you have to have a benchmark, if you have never driven something like I dont know... a Cayman then it will feel good in isolation.

Same for the Mini in some ways, these are VERY VERY VERY good cars handling wise. Never under esitmate them and certianly never over estimate the Fabia.

This is coming from somebody who owns a Fabia dont forget, I'm just very realistic and have a lot of experiance with other cars, on and off track. The best handling FWD car of all time as declared by EVO? The Integra Type-R and I owned + many other cars with that sort of focus so have a lot of comparisons to make. In all honesty the fabia, although a great car and I love it, is one of the worst cars I have driven dynamically and handling wise. By that I mean one thats trying to be sporty, which the vRS is of course.

vRS....Sporty :giggle: Its a luke warm hatch at best

Although Ive found going slightly slower into corners than you would do in any other car and powering through is the best option. Once settled it does hang on suprising well for a short wheel based car with a lump of pig iron up front.

I didn't go for coilovers but I went for the KW springs and dampers from DPM performance. Its lowered it by 20mm which is enough for me and I'm really impressed with the outcome.

It is more planted and feels like it's more efficient at putting the power down out of corners. The reported nose dive people have reported are drastically improved. The ride is firmer without being harsh, which is more comfortable than standard.

There is an occassional bounce on some road surfaces but overall I'm really impressed

Did you also get DPM to fit them? I just wouldn't know where to start lol

nope, my brother fitted them for me

Is there a way to make it handle like my old cooper s & what mods specifically would it involve?

No.

Lol, u enjoyed that didn't u

Plenty of things can be done to the vRS to get the handling kicked up a notch. One thing I think most people overlook is one of the vRS's party peices. GRIP! The car is full of good old fashioned mechanical grip, with that said I would highly recommend splashing some £££'s at a good set of tyres! With that said brakes would be next on my agenda, replace any worm bushes with poly ones or improved oem parts. Then look at the damping and springs. Then you have plenty of torsion bar choices. Once complete you will end up with a right B Road Blaster.

People will always modify there cars in diffrent ways, With that said I dont think there is a right or wrong way. Of course from your own car, take it for a good drive and work out first what needs the most attention and improvment. Try not to also set other cars as the bench mark. Learn the car and how you personally drive it. From that I hope it give you plenty of miles of smiles.

Intrestingly enough am thinking of popping my vRS in storage once shes finished and was looking at a mini cooper S as my next project. Would like the supercharger one over the turbo but heard the mpg is unbelivable bad haha cant wait  (Sorry for that tiny hijack)

I averaged 33mpg combined with my turbo s. My mate had a supercharged s that was gettin around 28 mpg

Yer thats the quotes ive been reading on the mini forums, my list of next possible projects is getting bigger.

I do like the idea of a Mini S, but I must say I do want to own some VTEC in my life before I die, ether EP3, DC2 or DC5

I PROMISE THAT WILL BE THE END OF MY HIJACK!!

Just my opinion... But if you want it to handle like your old cooper s and be as quick as your old cooper s... Why didn't you just keep your old cooper s! :p

If your just after reduced body roll then you need to look at your springs/dampers. Dont be fooled into cheap kits whether thats springs/dampers or coilovers. Yes they'll probably reduce body roll but might reduce overall grip in anything but a flat road. Good old favourites are Koni sports or bilstein B8's with some eibach pro springs or maybe without the springs. Or look at KW or bilstein coilover options.

Why not try a classic mini with a vtec lump. Might not be as refined as the new cars but will be a lot of fun ;)
