Wheel and Tyre sizes for Greenline Estate

Featured Replies

just ordered 4 winter tyres from Mytyres

my Greenline estate came fitted with Dunlop SP Sport 01 185/60/15 84H

no mention on fuel filler for any other tyre size ( wanted to have the option to fit snowchains so concerned about handbook reference to changing 195/55/15 to 185/55/15 tyres to be compatible with chains )

the 185/60/15's will be same width as the recommended 185/55/15's ie 5mm clearance either side of wheel than those 195's that are NOT compatible with snow chains

so ordered the 185/60's as already fitted (these are also much cheaper than the 185/55's)

supplies appear to be running low & prices creeping up

went for the Dunlop SP Winter Response (with Snowflake according to mytyres so a proper winter tyre?) (£73 each) at £295.20 including delivery but not fitting ( quoted £45 so far)

I have a set of chains that fit upto a 185/55/15 so I fitted them on original tyre to check for clearance - they just about fit this tyre but don't centre up so just every so slightly too small but the important thing is with the 9mm chain fitted I can still pass my hand past the suspension strut - though haven't tried the wheel on full lock each way to check that clearance

I bought 4 Goodyear Ultra Grip 8 (185/60R15) for mine. They are scheduled to arrive in a week.

Also with mytyres.

Hi BossFox

its reassuring that you have also gone for same size winters - are you planning on fitting snow chains if needs be?

the Goodyears aren't currently listed - I have noticed quite a few tyres disappearing off the list on Mytyres over the weeks while I have been waiting for my greenline to arrive

since ordering I have found a UK company in Northern Ireland that has a good range of premium tyres at cheaper prices than Mytyres & free delivery (drat-could have saved myself £30)

Good to know - although I didn't know they were Low Rolling Resistance - they are not advertised as such on the Dunlop website. Are they Run-On-Flats?

That's what I'm hedging towards for the same reasons - although I'm still waiting on an answer from Skoda on whether the 165/70R14s will work with the tyre pressure sensors. He thought not, but was checking.

I gave up waiting for Skoda Uk to answer my question "can I fit snow chains onto 185/60/15's"

I dont know if theses Dunlop SP SPORT 01's are run flat or not looking at the tyre nothing to suggest run flat

Yet the Dunlop website seems to suggest they are (look at the technology tab) :- http://www.dunlop.eu/dunlop_uk/I_want_new_tyres/tyre_range/passenger/summer/sp_sport_01.jsp ????

the way the tyre pressure checking system works I would assume that as long as all the wheels & tyres are the same size & the system has had the button pressed to set it then all will be ok ?

there are no sensors in the wheel

the run flat Dunlops may be called SP SPORT 01 DSST on the tyre wall ????

I only see SP SPORT 01 on mine

where the DSST = (Dunlop Self-Supporting Technology)

That's what I thought, but the TüV says that size is verbotten for cars with tyre pressure monitoring system.

TüV Allowable tyres for Skodas

Hi BossFox

No, I live in the South East of England. I've never needed snow chains in my life.

Even in the worst of the weather over the bad winter last year our Yeti got around fine on it's Goodyear vector 4season tyres, which are all-season ones.

It's quite mild here and there are no big hills either. I'm thinking even winter tyres are overkill, I could probably have chosen the all seasons. But figured I may as well go for a full winter tyre as I'm going to change again for the summer.

Many people here just run summer tyres all year. Probably less than 5% of car owners fit winter tyres, but it's getting more popular year after year to do so.

That's what I thought, but the TüV says that size is verbotten for cars with tyre pressure monitoring system.

TüV Allowable tyres for Skodas

page 158 section 5.8 shows the CWFA on 185/60/15 84T as Schneeketten zulässig ja = Snow chains allowed yes

there is also notes 3,4,5 in red against this size and note 5 says :-

Nur zulässig für Fahrzeuge mit Versionsnummer G ??? ???????? ?? ? (Fahrzeugausführung Greenline) = Only permitted for vehicles with a version number G? ???????? ? ? (Green Line vehicle design)

Have i correctly interpreted this that snow chains are officially ok with 185/60/15's?

I think keeping a pair of the snow socks or bands or similar in the car during the worst of the winter could be a better idea. Maybe not as good as chains, but if there's only a small chance of needing them, it saves weight and don't have the same problems of clearance. Anyone have experience of these?

Yes - I think you've read it right, and I had read it wrongly!

Glad your German is better than mine - or at least your reading! B)

I have carried autosocks around for some years now & only used them in anger once last winter , found that I needed to fit something to get up a hill with 8 " of fresh snow , so started to fit my chains only to get the clip caught on the brake disc wear cable - eventually freed this so quickly stuck the socks on instead as I had cold hands

amazed at the performance in this new snow - really good - I thought they allowed the tyres to ride up ontop of the snow & compress it & no slipping , problem with the socks is on older snow which has frozen over & is all jagged or when the tarmac starts to appear- they need to come off then as they will wear out, then the chains come into their own as they will grip on this rough ice without wear

I would say fresh new snow - especial deep new snow then autosocks

once the snow has been driven over by a lot of traffic & frozen into sharp jagged ruts ( or if sections of tarmac showing then fit chains

I heard from the local Skoda garage today - confirming that 165/70R14 is not allowed for the current Greenline models due to their tyre pressure monitoring system. Shame...

So now to try to find some nice Low Rolling Resistance winter tyres in 185/60R15...

I've been looking at Nokian Hakkapeliitta R, Michelin Alpin A4 or Pirelli W 190 Snowcontrol Serie II XL ECOIMPACT.

(Although I've had no joy finding the former from anyone who can supply them on 6Jx15 alloy rims).

Any thoughts?

Just received my new Greenline Estate registration documents today which told me the Type approval number = e11*2001/116*0291*32

So downloaded the latest 11/2011 Serienreifen from here www.skoda.de/download.php?id=424

and this is shown as not snow chain compatible but with a * next to it

the * = schneeketten die nicht mehr als 12mm auftragen according to Google translation this means = snow chains which do not apply more than 12mm

so I take this to mean a new Greenline on 185/60/15's can use a chain as long as it is 12mm or smaller

Thanks for the heads-up about the new document. It has changed - even for the older serial models.

Now it says 185/60R15 are not compatible with snow chains - which is what I thought I'd read before.

Also, my reading of the new * footnote is that only those snow chains not more than 12mm (thick) can be used on any of the wheels - and then only those that say "Ja" in that column. That basically means only 185/55R15 for the Greenline for the lowest rolling resistance.

Well, talk about fast delivery!

My Goodyear Ultra Grip 8 tyres arrived today.

I ordered with mytyres on the 7th, they were sent on the 8th with arrival expected on the 15th.

So 3 days after ordering they are here! :o

No thoughts on which of these is likely to offer lowest rolling resistance, then?

Life will be much easier for consumers when the new tyre labelling system comes in next year...

I can't tell if the Dunlop SP SPORT 01's that the greenline came with are low rolling resistance - looked on Dunlop's website & no mention there ?

so I wasn't that bothered with the winters - went for the Dunlop SP Winter Response

there wasn't much choice when I ordered them - best selection is Mytyres but even they had a lot of the premium brands missing ie no Michelins or Goodyears listed when I ordered - though they were both available on their site a couple of days ago

Finally ordered the winter wheels today: 185/60R15 Contis on 15" Enzo B rims. (Mostly because a friend could get me a nice discount on them and they got good reviews.)

Completely failed to find any quantitative information on the rolling resistance - although the TüV who must be obeyed say you can only have this size tyres in the rolling resistance is <8.3kg/t. Typical!
