Replacing RAM in netbook

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if I can replace a 1Gb DDR2 6400s 666Mhz with a 2Gb DDR2 6400s 800Mhz module? I know the increase in RAM will work but I can't find any 666Mhz chips

One thing you need to watch is that if you are running Windows 7 Starter (most netbooks come with it these days) it will not recognise more than 1GB of memory. If you up the memory you also have to upgrade Windows to take advantage of it.

Faster memory should work fine, you only really get problems if you try to use slower memory.

Another thing to watch out for is some netbooks require the netbook to be stripped down almost completely to change the RAM (Dell's springs to mind as one of them).

Had a wee look see, I'm using an HP 210-1010 which came with 1GB DDR2 6400s 666Mhz, Which I upgraded to 2GB DDR2 800MHz (PC2-6400) 200-PIN SODIMM, 5 minute job to swap overemoticon-0148-yes.gif

I'm not sure this is the case, because the specs say 32bit only and mention nothing on memory limits.

That plus I've seen a netbook specified with more than 1GB RAM and starter.

I posted a reply, but for some reason it never appeared so,,,,,  As long as the memory is the same DDR spec (DDR/DDR2 etc) and the same format (pin numbers), it SHOULD work; the only thing to watch for is the VOLTAGE. Some boards only supply 1.9volts, and some memory sticks want 2.2volts.  The speed is not an issue, if the board cant run 800Mhz ram, at 800Mhz, it will just run it at the highest speed the board will allow.

The maximum RAM size for Win7 Stater Edition is 2GB, a simple web search throws up that fact on several tech sites, however you are not limited to the SE edition, I installed Home Premium with only one problem, I could not find the correct gfx drivers; they are out there, but I didnt have time to keep searching, so I swapped back to XP until this netbook (EeePC), is no longer needed as my main PC. (ie, when I finally get back from China).

Not so. I've recently upgraded myeePC from 1 to 2 GB. No problem at all in Windows 7 Starter. Not that I use W7 I dual boot in to Linux (Ubuntu 11.04) :)

As said, some Ram upgrades will not be recognised by machine past a certain size, and some are soldered into place, and some have mixture of soldered and removable RAM for an upgrade.

My advice would be check if machine can be upgraded and if machine again, would recognise the increased RAM upgrade.
