Dealer VCDS Advice Needed

Featured Replies

Hi All - looking for some advice. My dad's Golf is showing an error 009299 - Diesel Particle Filter; Differential Pressure Sensor: Implausible Signal. And also an error relating to the wiring for the towbar (which it seems they have coded incorrectly). I cleared the DPF error and the light went out.

The car is still under warranty - do dealers take it thick if you show them a VCDS print out? Could they start any trouble because I scanned the car?

anyone?

You can show them, however they can't action anything under warranty off one. We don't use VCDS and any warranty claim needs to be proven and accompanied by our dealer diagnostic machine. A DPF fault maybe a faulty pressure sensor, worth getting it looked at..

Thanks for that - im hoping the light comes on again before they get to the dealer on tuesday

Well the light did come back on and they have now fixed the issue - they didnt like it when I mentioned the error of the incorrectly coded trailer module. Tried to tell me that VCDS was crap and that you shouldnt use it on a warrantied car as it can damage it!!! They could not see the error (apparently) and re did the adaption - dont know if it is actually fixed or not but they say lights work fine on their trailer board. The error I was getting was :

This is true, you can damage a car with VCDS - if you are clueless.

Speaking of clueless people, it seems that VW are as clueless as (some) Skoda dealers when it comes to towbar coding :wall:

If you want then you can use VCDS to check the coding is done correctly:

Yep, as you've seen you need to tread carefully with dealers and taking them printouts.

It's obviously helpful, but I'd usually say go to the dealer and just advise them you have an idea of what the fault might be, so they can start looking in the right area and hopefully save you and them some fault finding time.

Waving printouts under their nose can often offend :)

I don't know, I kind of enjoy it!

Lets them know they can't fob you off with any old rubbish of an excuse.

As long as you are polite and point out that you have had it diagnosed elsewhere first etc. then you should be OK. Some dealers can actually be reasonably friendly!

Looks like the CAN Gateway needs to be told the trailer module is there in the installation list to me.

Yup, when my relatives had issues with the electronics on their Octavia, the dealership they took it back to acted a bit "put-out" when they were told the list of symptoms and given a list of fault codes, as if it was somehow forbidden to have a fault code scanner. Seems a bit daft to me, as they were polite ("x is happening, this is a list of the codes logged, not sure if it's something to do with y, or if that's a red herring?") - I work in IT and love it when I get a fault report from a user with lots of information, as it makes my job so much easier! I know they have to look for themselves to double-check, but it'd at least give them a clue looking at the list of codes ("ah, I've seen this before, probably x").

Couldnt agree more - as a consumer you have every right to know whats going on with your car - perhaps if they were more trustworthy perhaps this would not be needed, however the reaction when I told them Im a software engineer and reading an event log can not possibly do any harm was priceless

perhaps if they were more trustworthy perhaps this would not be needed

For me, it's not even a trust thing. I got the fault code reader for my car so I could give it an occasional check to make sure everything was happy. If ever anything did go wrong, I'd hopefully find it easier to identify the cause and know if it were something I could fix, or if it were something that was best left to a professional. If that were the case, it would then allow me to give the mechanic a better "fault report", hopefully making their life easier! Maybe it's just the geek in me (DBA) making me think like that ... :)
