Fab vRS cuts out

Featured Replies

An annoying problem, and and ideas would be gratefully received.

Driving to work yesterday, doing 40-50 MPH when the engine dies completely. I managed to free wheel into a lane, but car would not restart.

Hour later AA arrive, connects up diagnostics, no fault codes, clears non-existant faults and car starts first time. I drive to Jacksons (local dealer) no problems. They've had the car for a day and can find no problems or replicate the fault.

What could have caused this?

I love the car but my confidence has taken a hit, ten minutes later and I would have been on the M3, I don't even want to think want could have happened.

Car's standard done 17500miles and was exactly one year old to the day yesterday.

Clutching at straws but it might have been Air in your fuel system.

What do you mean by Non existant faults? AFAIK if it is logged in the ECU then it's been a fault at sometime, no fault = no log.

The AA man said there were no faults logged, but then said he'd clear anyway!

All you can do is see if it happens again - Over time your confidence will build.

Mine does that a lot too, dunno why.

That is scary stuff and I'd be getting shot of any car that did that to me  Not that that helps you! ;)

Did you notice anything different about the car when you were driving it, before it cut out?

There was no indication at all.

One moment happily driving along, the next moment not!

Changing unfortunately isn't an option, though it did cross my mind.

I drove it lots yesterday, and no problems.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

bit of a long shot, but a friends Furby vRS suffered from the same symptoms and the fault was eventually identified as a loose earthing lead to the main ECU - the fault was only found when it fell off all together and the lead was hanging loose.

Although I can't be certain, the similiarities between the symptoms shown by your cars and my friends indicate this is the same problem - sounds like the same person isn't doing their job properly at the factory.

Hope you resolve the issue soon.

Cheers

I would definitely check ECU earthing - having an earth wire failure on my Citroen ZX actually KILLED my ECU in that it started misbehaving very badly indeed. Eventually it pretty much collapsed & I had to get shot of the car as it was getting dodgy to drive.

Don't expect that on a new car, but I will get my mate to check the car over after taking delivery anyway (he's a qualified mechanic and all that)
