not starting

My '09 FL has not started 2-3 occasions now. It's first thing on the day, so far once going its started ok from then on. It's like there's no solenoid action just dash lights, and nothing. So far its started on the 2nd or 3rd try but not good. It's not every 'first thing' time. Suppose it could be contacts in the key switch, or does the immobiliser stop the starter motor?

Can't see any previous similar threads so not a common problem? Don't know where the motor is located on a 1.4TSI. Not easily visible from a brief look.

Any ideas? Battery seems to be charged enough to start ok once the motor solenoid engages, or that's how it seems. I'll check the voltage tomorrow.
