Steering angle sensor

Featured Replies

Hi there,

This is not a new thing, but I am just trying to get some thought on it, and it has been there since new, but various visit seems to be unable to cure it.

When I turn right, the steering is much more responsive - ie a small steering to the right, the car would turn right quickly, however the left is noticeably slower.

Would this be my steering angle sensor?

Thanks!

When I used to work on steering systems they did have a centre point reference zero point, which can be reset via diag kit. So potentially not a parts problem but calibration. Get it reset.

Thanks for that, is that easy to do - the reason I ask is because when I took my car to 2 dealers, they say it was straight when it blatantly wasn't (that was within first 6000 miles) eventually dealer number 2 did full alignment for me, it improved things, but still not straight.

it's a 2 minute job if they now what they are doing (certainly on Toyota systems anyway). Straighten wheel, plug in diag kit, select zero point reset and press go (tolerances are quite slack). Don't touch wheel while doing it!

Unfortunately my experience of most dealers, Toyota, Suzuki, VAG, Mercedes (whoever, they are all the same), is that they are old gits that still try and do alignment, etc first! (my local Suzuki dealer said he did tracking by driving it down a straight road.....)

So ask to speak to a tech who actually knows what you are wanting - ask him if he thinks zero point might need a reset, if he sounds blank - ask for someone who does, I had to be almost rude to get another dealer to let me speak to another tech when I had a catalyst issue on another make . But from experience on Toyota it may not make a massive difference so you may have an underlying issue that WILL need alignment checks. It makes a noticeable difference if you have ESP and it kicks in at odd times if zero point is wrong.

If someones else know more on the detail of Skoda parts - I'll let them take over in the forum answers to this.

I have read this thread and the idea of an electronic fix is new to me. In your shoes I would make an appointment to see "Wheels in motion" the boss there is a very experienced hand at chassis alignment and will do a very precise and thorough job of establishing where your current set up is and adjusting it. Tony is to average garage wheel alignment what Mozart is to whistling in the bath.

They are at Chesham bucks and will give a clear and -in my experience-authoritative check and adjustment of all variables.

On my Seat Leon he found it was running with the tracking "correct" but the whole car was a couple of degrees off centre when compared with the line of the chassis.

Within factory spec but subtly and demonstrably wrong.

Thanks very much for both of your help, will propbably pop into the dealer first as it should be a free fix under warranty and if it isn't fixed then I would go and see wheels in motion.

Wheels in motion is the right place to go as dealer in their area use them to do job right. As far your problem with wheel response - I doubt its an electrical calibration needed. To me it sound like it has something bent or missaligned. Sensors only read postion but dont put any presusre on sterring system. If something is bent/missaligned then you need more work to turn wheel one way then other. That is the case in 99/100 times.

Thanks for that. However, it appeared to have the same problem after being tracked twice by the Skoda/VW garage. I have actually booked it into the local Skoda dealer to see if they can solve it, if not, then I will definitely try Wheels-in-motion.

Just wondering, are they expensive? I just had a looked, the Yeti is not present, so I chose the Golf (03 to 09) model and it came out to be 95 pounds ex. VAT!

If you dont have printout then the fact you had it tracked twice by Skoda/VW garage mean nothing. We had customers who tried different places for "tracking" done and it turn out it needed full geometry reading.

Trouble is that drivers think tracking is the right way to go. Tracking is toe only and that in many occasions wont fix problems. You need proper geometry read-out where they check camber, caster and at least thrust angle. Those are what called primery angles. There are others like setback, SAI, toe on turns, included angle and few more which are called secondary angles. You can be happy with right way spent money for what you call "tracking" when you get primery angles check/adjusted - otherwise you waste your money and time.

Get the full geometry done - thats the only way to go.

Thanks, it actually went in with the supplier dealer when new and they found nothing on three visits, so I gave up, went to a different dealer and they aligned it (as said on the warranty work sheet) once - not good, and twice - better, but not cured it. It has stayed like that since. All was done under warranty as it was below 6000 miles. I don't think any dealers have attempted a zero calibration on my car, so might worth a try.

You dont have far to Wheels in motion so I would give them a chance to fix it.

Thanks allias, I will take it to them if its not fixed.

Thanks Gisco Yeti, interesting line, I don't think the dealers use VCDS, but I think the idea is the same, I will print a copy to take with me.
