DSG box using Sport gears

Featured Replies

I hate to admit it but have just starting using Sport mode at times, so whats new about that?, well have had our Octy 55 plate and done 46000 miles and as said never used it.Jeez! doesnt it go in sport.Next time out with our caravan I will try it out when pulling away as I think it will be less strain on the engine.Question, as its reving more will I be raseing my fuel consumption?.

Yes it will be using more fuel and making more noise for little gain. What pulls you along and accelerates you is torque, the torque peak on a diesel engine is around the 2000 to 2500 rpm mark so that is the best area of engine revs to use.

It is actual power that drives acceleration. So higher gears will generally allow more oomph, although only up to point in a diesel.

But power is produced at higher revs so surely lower gears will allow more oomph using that analogy.

Yes you are quite right, I meant to say lower i.e. more revs for same speed.

something Ive wondered, never tried DSG in the derv, but in my mates petrol it really does have a tendancy to let the engine Rev out, especially in Sport mode, where abouts in the rev range does the DSG change in the dervs in normal Drive mode and Sport?

I'll give it a go on the way home tonight for sport, depending on traffic :) but I think it changes up at around 2500+

In normal with very gentle acceleration it will change up at 1500revs, with more throttle that goes up.

It does hold the revs longer but that doesn't do the diesel engine vRS any favours. It makes far faster progress in D in my opinion

I don't use the "S" mode. Just seems to scream it's Nads off and changes gear well past peak torque.

Just boot it in "D" mode ;)

 +1

In S mode it holds the lower gears just for the sake of it! "S" = scream not Sport!

S mode doesn't use different gears as suggested by the title, it just hangs on to the lower gears longer. In "D" mine changes at 1500 or so when driven gently on the flat or up to 5000 rpm with my foot to the floor. In S mode those numbers are 4000 and 7000rpm

thanks, just curious, SWMBO may be getting a DSG in her next car, and due to her mileage a CR engine is a must!

Sport on my diesel DSG just means it redlines every gear.

I use it now and again for an "italian tune up" - i.e. to clear the crud out, but otherwise no need

so in D mode what does it do when pressing on, rev up to 4500?

EDIT 4500 prob is the redline actually, does it rev to about 4000 in D mode then when accelerating

In my 140 PD TDI if I press the throttle pedal down to the kickdown button, but not actually pressing the button it will change up at 4000 rpm in D mode and 4500 rpm in S mode. Not really worthwhile using S mode in my opinion as the best performance in an engine is given between peak torque and peak power i.e. 1500 and 400 rpm.

Ian.

What, like this ? :giggle:

<snip>youtube</snip>

Yeah, that's the one!

I tend to just drive around in D but if I fancy having a blast or just need to hold a gear I'll shove it into manual a select the one I want that way. Even do it sometimes when I'm playing for economy as in manual you can shift into gear a few RPM sooner

"S" = scream not Sport!

couldn't have described it better myself :D
