hatch gas struts

Featured Replies

The gas struts on my hatch lid have apparently gone, boot drops like a stone when you close it, and this morning (slightly colder than it has been) only stayed up when the boot was right at the top.

Is this an expected failure given that the car's 8 years old? If so, there's probably no point in getting a second hand replacement. Any ideas of cost for new replacement?

Thanks,

Martin

It's a very heavy boot lid!

I know, I've had the car for three and a half years! :giggle: But its definitely got worse in the last year and since the weather got colder.

I know struts do fail eventually, they went on my old XR4x4.

Hi,

Boot strut part number is 1Z9-827-550, £38.83 from Skoda, a quick search on line with the part number £13.99.

hi Tony,

That's taken me to a company that sells them online. Cheers,

Martin

Make sure you fit them correctly!. When I replaced mine,I put the triangular shaped top bracket, the wrong way around, which caused the boot lid to drop on its own, even though they were new replacements!

The struts failed on my estate after two years, replaced under warrenty and they have been OK since. I suppose it just depends as regards the lifespan.

It's a very heavy boot lid!

It is, I took mine off to paint and opening the hatch was like lifting a gorilla up without the struts there.
