Scooby to Octavia - running costs??

Featured Replies

Hi all, I'm thinking about getting rid of my Impreza as the running costs are really starting to **** me off (even though I only do about 6k miles a year...).

We've already got a Fabia vRS which I am really impressed with so was thinking about getting an Octy to go with it

How would an Octy vRS compare to the Scoob? What is realistic mpg taking it steady?? What about thrashing it. To compare I currently get 25mpg driving like a granny (my daily commute along 40mph zones) and single figures when thrashing it on the back roads...

Also - I've seen a local vRS in a washed out pastelly yellow - is that Lemon Yellow? Looks amazing in the flesh :)

I've been checking this recently, and my conclusions are

>35 <40 mpg on an 'elderly lady' driving plan

>22 <30 mpg on a 'spirited' driving plan

>15 <22 mpg on a 'crazy hoon' driving plan

Ahhh not quite as good mpg as I thought...

What insurance group is it?

How does the 130TDI compare? I presume you can remap them up to 180 ish?? Apart from being slightly heavier at the front, do they have the same suspension? A 130tdi vRS lookalike sounds appealing :D

I went from a 245bhp UK Impreza which averaged 23mpg to a Jabba'd 4x4 Octavia with 220bhp which averaged 29mpg. Best ever tank in the Impreza was 28.9, Octy 37.2

Insurance, servicing and tyres were all much cheaper.

I worked it out fully before the Octavia went and it was 40% cheaper to run overall over the same mileage. That excludes the Impreza's engine blowing up under warranty and me fitting a new clutch and flywheel whilst the engine was out.

I bought the Octavia at 15 months old so the actual % depreciation was less than the Impreza also when I came to sell.

The vRS is longer geared so you lose the 4x4 but its more economical on the motorway(same basic engine pre-tuning)

Never missed the Impreza, still think the Octy was just about the best all-rounder I've owned !

Hi

A tdi pd 130 (same engine as Fabia Vrs) will remap sometimes up to 200bhp but the clutch will need replacing quite soon it cant cope with all the torque for too long ...I have the pd 130 elegance hatch (six speed gearbox and lots of toys) and it does go quite well ..but I find the suspension is a little soft and it will wallow about sometimes....Suspenion mods no problem and I think even 18 inch wheels will fit .......it's still great fun...people see TDi on the back and decide your slow...start to overtake and then you pull away ....makes them very nervous about overtaking diesels after that :D great car and just as cheap to run (or maybe cheaper) than the Fabia Vrs ....makes me smile every time I drive it.

Rob - how did the Octy 4X4 compare to the Scoob handling wise?

Ahhh not quite as good mpg as I thought...

I don't quite agree with the lower figures Dan's quoted unless your talking track driving. I've never got less than 22mpg average giving it a good thrashing playing with an Impreza on one occasion as it happens. This was on my 16 mile commute into work.

Over the course of 2 years and 40k miles in 2 x re-mapped Octavias my average mpg is 33 mpg. Can get over 40 mpg average on a good m/way run.

You're probably at the point I was just over 2 years ago - as that was one of my questions ! It's worth searching on here as there are a lot of threads about 4x4 v VRS and improving the suspension on both (KW v1,2,3's etc)

There are a couple of 4x4 owners who went further than the simple remap that most do (220-235bhp) and upgraded ths suspension, brakes , intercooler etc.

In standard form, the Scooby is a sports car whereas the 4x4 isn't (rolls), but the flip side is the ride comfort and lack of noise. On saying that, it coped on track once its settled for each bend, you can get the power down early.

Talking of Imprezas. A guy at work has just bought a brand new WRX (UK dealer) and got a cracking deal. I think he paid about

If you drive it purely for fun though, mileage doesn't really come into it. They are expensive toys, but then you get a lot of fun :D

I sold my Impreza Turbo after having to pay

What insurance group is it?
Group 16 for vRS, 14 for 4X4.

 Is that average MPG?

LOL... 'Crazy Hoon' does indeed include trips on track. I can just manage to squeeze down to 21 on the road, but that's a real rarity.

Average is about 32.76 over the last 6000 miles.

 Is that average MPG?

Averaged over the miles covered in 'Hoon' mode.

I get 17 - 19 mpg in town, normal driving, 35 mpg motorways and 12 mpg on track.

Steve

As I posted recently elsewhere on here, here is my reply to the same question ages ago on Scoobynet:

Had mine for 32 months, did 138k miles in it.

Fuel economy; motorways cuising at 80-85 indicated, I'd get about 38mpg, A roads about 35, brisk driving on A roads about 30-32, trackdays about 12 and the Ring about 8-10 mpg.

Servicing costs: You can either go variable servicing or fixed 10k servicing. I went 10k due to my mileage and needing to know when it would need a service. Costs were:

10k =
