Talk of Clutches and DMF etc

Featured Replies

Followed a couple of threads about clutches and DMF on here over last couple of days.

One of the questions asked has been about the standard clutch if the car is mapped to 160 - 170 bhp, will the standard clutch take it?.

My question is, what is the clutch used in the PD160 engine, is it he same as the PD130 vRS. If not I guess its slightly higher rated and if this is the case would it fit the PD130 engine.

Cheers

It's the torque that kills the clutch, not peak bhp. As far as I know the clutch is the same in the PD160 as the PD130 and PD150. It's rated for around 300lb/ft, the PD150 peaks at 260ish from memory so I can't imagine the PD160 peaks much higher than that. So well within the limits of standard.

It's not the bhp its the torque that does the damage.

Standard clutch should withstand 300lb/ft but to be

honest its how you drive it that will either preserve or destroy

the clutch.

Mine is mapped tojust under the torque limit but I could

still knacker it if I drove like a tool.

DOH, Gavin beat me to it....

In fact, according to Wikipedia it seems that the PD150 peak torque is 236 lbft, and the PD160 is 243. So barely any difference at all, and both well within the limits of the standard clutch which is around 300lbft. Obviously if your car's had a hard life and even through general wear, this may well be reduced, so I think many people on here have had their maps limited to 270ish lbft which gives a bit of margin to compensate for an old clutch or one that may have been abused in a past life.
