Relay clicking in and out

Featured Replies

This morning i decided i needed to put the heated rear screen on, then when i backed up and turning the wheel at the same time, there was a relay pulling in and dropping out by the sounds of it, not chattering like it was a bad connection just on/of on/off.

I didn't know what had caused it but when i got to work i tried the heated screen again, and it started doing it again when i turned the wheel, when stationary or moving?? has anyone noticed this before??

There has been issues with the power steering and other electrics not enough power because the steering is very demanding if this makes sense ?

Oh right so it's normal? It's like a feature that turns off the heated screen to supply the extra power to the power steering, and it's the relay dropping out as it looses the power momentarily?

Normal? But apparently it's an issue

I have also noticed this too - Never bothered to brng it up however as I very rarely use the rear de-mister. With the colder mornings now well on the way I'm sure this will change however. My vRS is due for its next service in the about 1700 miles so I will mention it when it goes in and see what they have to say.

Cheers for the answers.

Wills- will be good to see what skoda say about it, you'll have to let us know

Keep us posted please.

Thanks.

I have the same issue with my Roomster. It is because of the battery. She is only 44Ah and it is too low for both rear window defroster and power steering. Though rear defroster is 'comfort' while power steering is 'safety' and when power needs occurs car decides to serve safety first. The sound is the relay turning on and off rear heater.

Just to update this thread - my vRS was serviced today (well, yesterday now) and I mentioned the clicking sound.

When I went to pick it up no mention was made of my enquiry so I had to ask what the outcome of my enquiry was. I was told that it is "normal and they all do it". I couldn't really get more of an answer than this as the receptionist was having to relay the mechanics message. Whether it was actually investigated or not I don't really know. :S

Anyone else tried reporting it at service time??

I would have thought it's normal as it's managing the commands between steering and heater. I'm guessing all cars do it and it's only now you hear it because there's next to no insulation to damp the sound. It is the first car I've ever heard relays clicking even when wipers are on intermittent. The click is it turning on and off.

When I have my wipers on I get the clicking sound. Same goes when I press the button for the heating of the back window. I guess it's normal.
