New car first day nightmare

Featured Replies

Had a bit of a disaster today. About 3 months ago we decided to treat ourselves to a new Fabia Estate. Because of the spec we wanted it was a factory order. The one thing the Wife has always wanted was a sunroof so we decided to splash out and have one as an extra.

Gets down to dealer to pick car up today and guess what. No sunroof. Missus is gutted. It was the only thing she REALLY wanted and was looking forward to.

It looks like the dealer has #ucked up and not ordered it. They have not charged us for it.

The thing is they have offered to have a local firm fit one for us and stand for half the cost. I thought OK at least they are prepared to make amends. The only thing that worries me is a retrofit of the sunroof. Will it all be rust proffed OK etc. I would think it

I wouldn't accept that as an alternative at all. It isn't going to be the same as a factory fit and would you really want someone going near your new car with a tin opener?

Reject the car and make them order a replacement.

Sorry to hear that :(

Personally I wouldn't let anyone near my car with a tin opener putting in an aftermarket sunroof.

If you really can't be without one then reject the car. Other thing would be to see whether the dealer can source another within the dealer network more to your spec.

Check the order form....quickly....if it clearly states a factory fitted sunroof then reject the car PDQ!!!!

You must act QUICKLY

Even driving away in it may have been a mistake, but I'm sure the legals in here will point you in the right direction.

It is NOT what you ordered.

Trade-in price (if appropriate) must stand until new, correctly specced car is delivered.

REJECT THE CAR NOW!!!!

Yes, I would also reject it. After market sunroofs are really nasty. I don't know your circumstances, but I would ask the dealer to get a replacement pronto, or return your deposit immediately.

Trouble is the sunroof was not on the order form. The guy must have forgot to put it down and I must not have picked it up at the time.

I've also given them the bsankers draft and come home with the car .....

Have you got air conditioning in the new car?

Straight back there tomorrow , and take legal advice if they don't play nicely

Yeah it's an Elegance. The missus REALLY wanted a sunroof though. kind of a lifelong thing...

A friend of mine had a similar thing. He ordered a Polo Estate and specified that he didn't want a sunroof. When the car arrived it had one, even though on the order form is clearly stated no sunroof. He is 6'2" and as sunroofs generally take upto 4" of headroom, he struggled for headroom. The dealer kept insisting "but its free", but he rejected the car after 2 weeks without problem. And they let him ride around in it until a non-sunroofed one arrived. Suppose it depends on the dealer...

Take that bad boy back asap my old fruit!

Would you really stand there and watch some grease ball with an angle grinder cut a nice hole in your roof!!!!

Sod that! (s*d i mean)

The customer is always right, go back on your own and explain how upset your wife is about the whole thing, tell em a dying relative left her the money for her new car and it has really upset her etc,

Yep that should do it!

Keith.

You have the right to expect the car you ordered to the exact spec, and if the dealer is at fault thats there problem and the ball is in your court.

Reject the car.

I have to agree with the anti-retrofit brigade. Wouldn't appeal at all to me.

Had a good chat with the wife and it looks like were going to take it on the chin and keep the car. She does not want the grief. We've had a rough year and this would just add to it. It is a lovely car. Just without a Sunroof. I'll post a few pics soon. We do have another motor with a sunrrof ( not driven by the misus ) and a TVR with no roof so lifes not 2 bad........

Would agree to definately NO to retro fit sunroof - apart from anything else it WILL effect resale value when you come to trade-in.

You say that the sunroof was not on the order, which I take you signed ? if this is the case then they have supplied you with the car you ordered. If it stated that the vehicle was to have a factory fitted sunroof and they had not done this you would be able to reject the car, however as you say the car was a factory order therefore some time has passed - plenty of time for the mistake to be picked up - if as you say it was really the sunroof that your wife wanted - surely it would have been picked up when it came to signing the order ?

The only way out that I can see is if the salesperson wrote it down anywhere that you wanted the roof - even if its not on the order form - did they maybe fill in an appraisal form for your part ex ?? - most salesman I know use this as a jotter to make notes as they go along - this is then transferred to the order form.

Best thing would be to get down there - speak to the salesman involved and ask him what they can do - if he admits that you have asked for a roof - maybe there is something they can do - but dont whatever you do have a retro fit roof.

Hope you can get it sorted

Its a shame :(

Sure you will soon love the car though, sunroof or no sunroof

I'd certainly agree with the anti-retro-fit comments. Had it done to my first car and it leaked. Also I don't suppose you'll get an electric tilt/slide one with one-touch and a blind like the factory-fit ones. You must be gutted, I know I would be as that was the only "must-have" on my options list.

It is a very tricky situation if the roof isn't on the order form. Looks like you've learnt a harsh lesson that we are all guilty of - read before you sign!!

I would imagine the dealer does feel some remorse for the mistake and has offered you a solution. I'm with everyone else, give the aftermarket one a miss. You may be able to strike some other deal with them though by way of accessories or servicing, give that a go.

I reckon you could get a free service or an extended warranty period out of all of this ? it would help soften the blow . . .

Interestingly (but slightly off topic) we got ESP without ordering it.
