15" winter tyres

Featured Replies

Hey ppl,

I've posted a few topics regarding getting ready for the winter and how ive bought some vw 15" alloys, now i'm about to purchase some tyres (hopefully this incoming week). I've had to make a choice of 195 55 R15 or 195 50 R15 - i'm going to choose the 195 55 R15's mearly because this should be give me the most accurate ready on my speedo (hope this is a good enough reason lol but I know the 195 55 R15 have been recommended on a few other posts on briskoda)

What do you's think about these: -

Pretty good reviews but value you guys opinions on whether or not these would be a good set?

Any other recommendations plz add them (and a link if possible)

Many Thanks

You might get more information in the new tyres forum. :)

Buying winter tyres, if its only "50" or "55" that you are trying to decide on, then if you are already running with 15" rims maybe stick with the size fitted as you might need to use the spare - that is only important if the spare is full size. One other thing, are the VW wheels the same offset (ET) to your other wheels. If any of that is not important, then go by pricing "50" against "55".

One point maybe of interest, when I speced up my wife's Polo 9N back in late 2002, I added 15" Melbournes (5 spoke) and the car came from factory with 195/55 tyres fitted. A few years later, after looking for replacement tyres, I became aware that most, if not all Polo Sports (no GTIs at that time yet) that I checked out, were fitted with 195/50 tyres - and that was quite a few still with factory fitted tyres (I was sad enough to check tyre date codes against reg plate!!), so who knows which is correct - for my wife's car a 1.4SE with 75PS, I'd have preferred "50" as its a bit sluggish anyway and every small help is needed!

Also, let your insurance company know what you are doing and remember that the speed rating is a lot lower than what was fitted at factory, although common sense means that this should not be an issue when you use them only from start of November to April. Try not to hammer them when the temperature is above 10C as they will be a lot "floatier" than summer tyres and you could just damage the outer rubber cladding.

One final thing, get in there quick as time is moving on and prices will go up and supplies will disappear as the snow and ice turns up!

I'm looking at putting some 15" alloys on my vrs as there is such a poor (& expensive) selection of winter tyres available in 16" size.

Can anyone advise what model of VW I need to look for please? I'm assuming a Golf would be suitable, but have no idea what MK I should go for, I understand the offset is the critical dimension, but is there anything else I should be aware of when looking?

I think that you should be sticking with Fabia or Polo 9N or Ibiza 6L wheels - maybe even some steel ones - I'd reckon that Fabias must have come with 15" steels. If you are really wanting VWs then Melbourne (5 spokes) were what some of the Polo 9n used - and they were used with 195/55 and 195/50 tyres.

You need wheels with PCD 5x100, offset ET38 - ET43, centre bore 57.1

Potential donor cars include;

VW mk3 Golf GTI/VR6

VW Corrado - provided its 5 stud

VW mk4 Golf

VW Bora

VW Polo - any 5 stud

Audi A2

Audi A3 - mk1 only

Audi TT - mk1 only

SEAT Ibiza - any 5 stud

SEAT Leon/Toledo - mk1 only

Skoda Fabia

Skoda Roomster

Skoda Octavia mk1

Original equipment wheels off any of these cars will have all the relevant details stamped on them, either between the bolt holes or on the back of the spokes.
