Which battery for 2.0 TDI?

Featured Replies

The battery on my 06 plate 2.0TDI is becoming a little tired over the past few colder mornings, so thought it best to replace before it lets me down.

Two quick questions.

The battery that's in is rated 61Ah/330A yet the web sites suggest that I need to replace with an 74AH. Have I had the wrong size battery in from the off, or is the 61Ah the right size? don't know if any of you could check under the bonnet and let me know.

The second question is do you have any advice/experience on which is the best battery to go for.

Thanks

sold my Octy now so I can't check under the bonnet but I have had problems with buying third party batteries. I had one fail on me just after a year and so went to the dealer for an OEM replacement. the VAG one was actually the same price as the "cheap" one but has a longer warranty.

Hope that helps

GOT MINE FROM HERE http://batterymegastore.co.uk/

This looks a good value site, and interestingly the batteries it lists are in the 71 -76Ah range - more than the 61Ah that's fitted as standard.

I have no problem with going for the greater capacity - one thing I was checking was whether the 61 AH was the right one in the first place.

Varta at £73.99 incl vat and dilivery looks a good bet: http://batterymegastore.co.uk/product/574+012+068/

As long as it meets the 61AH minimum, what you want to do is concetrate on the CCA Cold Crank Amperes, as to regard to the Varta battery its seem exceptional value and great CCA.

The only down side of buying batteries online is that if you ever need to claim on the warranty (though TBH I doubt you will with a Varta/Bosch) you would have to take the battery off the car and post it back to them. Then you would need to buy/borrow another battery from somewhere to be able to use the car in the meantime. Buying it from somewhere relatively local at least gives you the option to get a jump start then drive the car to them with the duff battery on for a replacement there & then.

Not saying don't buy car batteries online if the price is good, just consider claiming on the warranty may be prohibitively awkward and/or expensive.

Looking to move on this, but as a final check I see that the recommended batteries on the baterymegastore site (and others)are roughly 280mm long, against the 240 mm of the OEM. The battery tray looks tight for an extra 40mm, and wondered whether others have put these bigger batteries in OK?

Just checked the Golf which has the same PD140 engine and the battery is a Varta 70ah. However, if a minimum of 61ah is a requirement, this is the one fitted on the vRS (petrol) which is exactly them same size as the Golf one.

That's the same size battery I have on mine (278x175x190mm) and it fits like a glove

The only difference is mine's the Bosch version, but Varta and Bosch are exactly the same battery, just with different labels on.

I thought I'd close this thread off by letting people know that the larger (278mm) battery fits comfortably in the battery tray as a replacement for the OEM 242mm battery. Might be useful information as the colder mornings may be too much for the 4-5-6 year old factory fit batteries. You do wonder why a smaller and less powerful battery was fitted in the first place.

Good service by mega batteries - ordered 2.30pm; delivered 9.00am next day

Did you buy the Varta battery in the link above? I have an 06 Octavia 140 TDI like you and thinking that this or next year I will need a new battery. My Dad's 05 Elegance needed it the year before last, but as I only got my car in August I'm not sure if the battery will have been changed or not already.

Yes, I went for the Varta (blue) at £73. The other one I thought about was the Lucas Premium (£83) from energy centre on ebay (I think they're an arm of Alpha Batteries) as they offer a lifetime guarantee. But not sure how easy that would be to action as and when the battery failed in 4/5+ years time.

Great, thanks for the confirmation

The OEM battery that was fitted to my petrol vRS 2008 is a 70ah (340A DIN/ 570A EN)part number 1J0 915 105 AE which is actually on the way out. Not sure why they fitted a bigger battery than yours especially as yours is a diesel? I'd be inclined to fit the 70ah one.

I had to have new battery for our 55 reg early this year fitted by Skoda Eastbourne £117 !!!.

I fitted a bosch silver, which is a varta silver.

It was a touch bigger, and a good bit more powerful.

Hi I'm new here

Replaced battery on Octavia elegance tdi 1968cc 2005 dsg auto and after resetting all seemed ok.

Next time I started the car, the engine management light stayed on.

Reset it three times, same thing happens

Hindsight, had to use jump leads to start it when it first broke down, then drove for a couple of hours to try and recharge battery.

That's when I first noted the EMLight. Had to jump start again next morning to get to my mechanic, who replaced battery and reset electronics.

Apparently no fault codes showing

Any help will be much appreciated

Thank you
