thoughts on the STS

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I've got a silver fabia vrs currently standard. I might look at an sts for a remap however what do people think of them?

Do you get the specified power output bhp?

Are they reliable as for not having engine problems after?

Is there a noticeable difference after?

Also can you run a remap on everything else being standard?

Cheers,

Oli

The STS is simply a Self Tuning System - this is the bit that plugs into the car so you can upload the modified map.(plus a few other tricks)

As for the shark Performance re-maps, i have yet to hear a bad word about them, they are supposed to be one, of if not the smoothest re-maps available.

I have got a shark remap via an STS unit on my VW T4 and it has totally transformed the van. Less smoke, more power and better economy, all without having to leave home to get it done. Haven't got a bad work to say about Shark.

posted in your other thread not realising you had duplicated the question

if you mean a map from forum sponsors Shark Performance with their STS box so you do not need to travel to them then it would be a good choice and there is plenty of feedback from many happy people such as myself :)

in answer to your questions the easy answer is a big yes

its not always that simple though.

mine has not been on a dyno so I cant confirm if the numbers match but others have and they did. each engine is different and I believe there is variation of about 5% which you can confirm on Sharks site as I am sure they state it.

reliability after a map is also a tricky one and I would say that ignoring where you get a map you do need to realise that the engine and other parts of the car will be under more stress if you add more power - simple as that.

a bad map can cause specific problems with, for example the clutch, if the power delivery is not done correctly however with a reputable company like Shark you dont have that problem.

personally I have had my head gasket go - was that the maps "fault"?

no chance!

I have no doubt it was already a problem most likely from assembly at the factory but it may not have happened as soon without the map though it would have failed at some point either way.

if there is a fault or weakness in the engine then adding a chunk of power will put it under stress and bring out the fault sooner. go into mapping with your eyes open though

is there a noticable difference - not half! :p

much more eager to rev, pulls hard all the way to the red line rather than falling off after 3K, much more power and better power delivery and better fuel economy thown in as well. :giggle:

not heard anything bad about Shark - not one word! and I am looking forward to going back for the next installment once I upgrade a few bits

and yes you can have the map with everything else standard but you will be on a slippery slope :D

for me brakes were the first improvement post map and others are now planned :D

hope this helps

The STS (and I'm sure Shark will be gratified that their unit name is now the default term for a self tuning system) is just a simple way to apply the map to your car.

I've used Shark Performance for over 3 years but I've only just had a remap from them (on my TT) and they're just BRILLIANT at what they do.

They put in a set of rollers and practically overnight they became THE reference rollers on Briskoda. The fact that they almost immediately proved themselves incorrect about injectors and power output just strengthened their credibility.

They don't claim massive numbers for their maps and they favour driveability over absolute numbers. You certainly won't be disappointed with a Shark remap. You might get the same satisfaction from another remap, but you can be certain of it with a Shark remap.

And they're very good at OEM retrofits and general servicing/mechanical stuff too.

Thanks for all the info guys! :)

When you say slippery slope, you mean adding more to it, or a fact of having a standard turbo etc under too much pressure?

I think I will definitely look into it. On the shark website it says £150+ / remap 165bhp stage 1.

How much is the sts from shark including everything ie, tuned data etc?

By slippery slope I only mean that its such a huge improvement over stock that you will start to think "what's next" :)

If you want pricing then just call them or post in the sponsors forum and I am sure they will give you all the details.

Worth every penny
