1.8tsi or 1.9 tdi

Featured Replies

Hello im new in the forum and im looking forward on buying a skoda octavia

My choices are

2012

1.8 tsi which is more equipped.

and

2011

1.9 tdi which is less equipped. (The only equipment that doesnt have is the autodimming rear view mirror and the multifunction steering wheel.)

Both cars are new and the only difference appart from the year its the price the 1.8tsi is $1000 more.

The question its which one is the best all around, on manteinance costs, fuel economy around town, i do like 6,999 miles a year. And which is more reliable in long terms im planning to keep it for a long time.

thanks in advance

Diesel every time

If you're doing less than 10k miles pa, then petrol is the sensible option.

If you regularly do long distances & want economy then diesel would be better. However if you do loads of small trips & the car is fitted with a DPF then you could have problems with the DPF.

1.8TSi is a lovely engine - just seems to poodle around when you want that, then take off like a rocket when the road opens up. No trouble getting over 40 m.p.g. on a clear longish run..

Please not another diesel vs. petrol thread :'(

The only person that can decide is you, test drive both cars!

Test drive both as mentioned, but owning a 1.8TSI Superb, I have to say it's a lovely engine, and even on my "Gentleman's Express" is torquey, powerful, economical and refined.

It's all down to personal preference, but the 1.8TSi and 1.9TDi could not be more different in terms of performance and character, I'm surprised you are looking at comparing them

Ive had both and they are both very good engines but as said before if you are doing low miles stick with petrol.

The TSi has lots of power and is smoother and quieter.

Not an Octavia owner anymore but really wish I still was after switching to a Fabia Monte Carlo after owning both a Octavia Vrs TFSI and a Vrs 170 cr, but today I have been driving a 1.8 TSI SE Plus estate and have been so impressed by this engine. It has so much power that is seamless and so smooth and I managed an impressive 48.2 mpg on a 25 mile trip today keeping to 70 mph on the duel carriageway which also included a small amount of town driving.

This was all achieved from a car with only 850 miles on the clock so still very tight and it's more economical than my 1.2 tsi Monte which is just appalling, so it's in the dealers at the moment having some checks done to see why it's so bad ie: 39 mpg over a couple of days driving like a nun and fully run-in with 7k on the clock.

So i think the 1.8 tsi is a stunning engine and easily as quick as the Vrs 170 I had a couple of months ago and very economical if driven with a little restraint.

I've got a 1.8TSi in a Superb Estate at the mo, and agree with what's already been said....goes like a rocket and I'm used to a 170 CRD in a vRS !

I switched from a 1.9TDI to a 1.8TSI Octavia just over a year ago.

With my driving pattern the 1.9TDI averaged 51mpg varying from mid forties around town to high 50's on motorway cruises. The 1.8TSI has averaged 37mpg varying between low 30's around town to mid 40's on motorway cruises.

Service costs are similar but the advantage here for the 1.8TSI is that there is no cambelt to change at 4yrs old. Advantage of the 1.9TDI over other diesels is that it has no DPF.

Performance is chalk and cheese as you would expect with 160BHP and 250 torque for the 1.8 vs 105BHP and 250 torque for the 1.9TDI. The other major difference is the refinement of the petrol that is whisper quiet even under hard acceleration. The 1.9 diesel is OK at cruising speed but is a little gruff and growly under load.

This is what I found but as someone else said, you need to drive both to decide which is best for you.

So averaging about 10 to 11 thousand miles a year? Stick to petrol!
