He is now considering legal action unless he gets a replacement car.

That'll be interesting!

Is this simply a case of the manufacturers/dealers not informing the buyer or the buyers not doing their homework, or a bit of both I guess?

Had the misfortune to catch part of Watchdog the other week and there was a piece on DPFs.

A correctly mapped diesel shouldn't black smoke in the first place.

Yeah but small modern diesels are mapped to the brink to get the emissions as low as possible,

We dont have that many issues at work with dpf's but volvos tend to have a failsafe that throw them into limp mode before dpf becomes that full it carnt be regenerated and emptied,

Main issue is when they come round to having them replaced at 72k on smaller engine cars with additive to help them regenerate

Car not fit for purpose if you ask me, it's less than 6 years old and has had major and expensive breakdowns.

If you assume you buy a car as a white good, then you really shouldn't have to do that much research into it and if a dealer sold it to you even though you'd given a hint or said you were doing lots of shorter trips (estate agent gives it away) then that would open up a mis-selling question.
