Xenon bend lighting not working on Octavia VRS FL

Featured Replies

Hi all,got round to doing a couple of winter preparation jobs yesterday namely new wipers and uprated H1 high beam bulbs.Wipers were a doddle however bulbs were a bit more of a challenge however i finally got it all back together and it all worked. However on start up the xenons do the self levelling dance but the conering light function seems to have given up the ghost.I have checked bend lighting on maxidot is ticked but no joy. Please help.....

The light switch is in the 'Auto' position isn't it?

When you say "bend lighting" on maxidot are you referring to not ticking "Tourist mode"? If the lights are in tourist mode then I think they will not move but am not aware of a box that can be ticked for cornering light function unless that is for cornering foglights (which I don't have).

Xenons change direction when you turn the steering wheel.

Make sure tourist mode is off, and turn on the cornering function. In fact turn the tourist mode on then off again as you can hear it moving the lights (with the engine off and ignition on) when you activate it which may serve as a test that the system can move the lights.

When you say they do the level check, do they also swivel from side to side.

Mine drop down, swivel then reset to the correct height.

If they swivel, then it means the motors are fine.

If these are both ok, could you have dislodged a connection that controls the sweep?

I have seen posts that suggest a reset is sometimes needed if the system fails to recognise Xenons. Not sure if a battery disconnection may force the system to re-check all its equipment.

it doesn't have to b on 'auto' to bend.

it will also bend on 'on'.

+1.

make sure 'tourist mode' is not active.

In the UK they only corner in the auto position.

Failing that the next thing to check would be the tourist mode as others have said, then finally the connectors.

In the UK they only corner in the auto position.

Have to disagree - mine turn as I steer round corners in the 'On' position.

In the UK they only corner in the auto position.

On my Vrs the cornering function works in both positions

I assume we are all talking about the AFS/AHL (Adaptive Front-light System / Adaptive Headlights ) and not the cornering foglights? (as these do not bend, they just come on or go off)

I personally do not like the Auto headlights function, but I have been told by Ross-Tech that the only way to have the AFS/AHL function is for the light switch to be used in 'Auto' on my Superb the AFS works perfectly in 'Auto' but is disabled in both tourist mode and when the switch is in the 'On' position. :wonder:

I think the Superb has a subtly different system. The Octavia does not have adaptive headlights but merely auto-levelling ones. That difference might explain the different interaction with the headlight switch setting.

I have the same lamps as you - I recently 'turned off' the cornering function of the lights as it left dark areas between headlamps and main beam lamps when they 'cornered' and I found it distracting. I used the Maxidot facility to change this function.

So we are talking about two different headlights on two different cars? Little wonder they operate differently.

I also have no corner movement on my Xenons, although they do the dace fully. Following this thread I have come to look at my bend light setting in Maxidot and can't find it any where....

So No bendlight option, just a tourist option under lighting.

So trip to the dealers?

My Octavia has adaptive bendy lighting which is standard on the L&K. The do a little dance when you switch them on ie up, down, side, side.

Did not realise they did not bend when on the On position rather than Auto as that seems daft as you can only put the fogs on on on (never had three words the same in a sentence). Are we sure about this?

The option to turn off/on the bend lighting with maxidot is in the ASSISTANTS menu.

The bend lighting only works if the car is moving.

In the Octavia it should work in the AUTO and ON position if you have the AUTO option. I don't have the auto lights option fitted.

The Superb is different.

Octavia has AFS if you spec Xenons, this means they go left/right when the wheel turns left/right above a certain speed (15kmh iirc). They also work in Auto and On postition.

You are quite right but the adaptive system in the Superb furthermore adjusts the throw of the lights according to speed and conditions. That is the difference.

Superb has AFS-II, Octavia AFS old one. There is a thread with pics somewhere.

There's a lot of balony on this thread! According to the brochure the Octavia facelift has AFS II which includes bend lighting and changes in range in rain and motorway conditions, etc.

On my facelift Scout AFS works whether on Auto or just On, and it can be turned off by unticking the bend lighting option in maxidot.

Additionally the lights can be flat-beamed by selecting the tourist mode.

Cornering spots i.e. single fogs illuminating on tight turns and corners are separate, and are not enabled on my car.

The brochure is not known as an authority on anything unfortunately and has been the source of much baloney in and of itself. My Octavia has factory fitted non adaptive AFS. I haven't tried the Auto/On position but assume it would be the same as any other Octavia.

don't trust brochures as gospel.

with the fl rs, some markets (countries) get afs (bending only), while others get afs2 (bending + throw adjust).

best way is to look at the ring around the xenon projector housing - its engraved on it wat type it is.

mine says "bending xenon" - hence afs only.

the superb gets the advanced afs2 only.

Mine (UK, MY12) Octavia just has 'Bending Xenons' on the ring, does seem to swivel on Auto or On as far as I can remember.

Interesting that the brochure is a bit misleading, I had simply assumed that the AFS2 was the swivel.

Reading the Superb brochure it is clearer as they have Bi-Xenon lights which, if like my last car, have a shutter that flaps up on the Xenon light when on full beam to allow the full beam out as well as secondary un-dipped Halogens that illuminate. That is assuming that the superb brochure is correct!

So in theory this shutter is controlled by the system to provide the adaptive function of the throw control.
