Gear change indicator

Featured Replies

Whilst driving my yeti today I noticed that a couple of times when I followed the gear change indicator it resulted in my instant MPG going down. Ignoring it and changing back up the mpg was back up again. This was on a straight road, slight incline. I thought the idea of the indicator was to get you to change gear at the optimal point for economy etc? Does it have any intelligence behind it or is it something like "throttle pedal at x percent, rpm at y, say change gear"?

My car beeps when it gets to 9.5k rpm. I change gear at that point if that's what you mean? B)

Those shift up lights always seem to come on too early in the real world IME. Not sure if they take labouring the engine into account either, which might be part of it?

Yes, that's right.

It's supposed to help economy, but doesn't seem able to tell what type of gradient the car is on. So it often makes mpg worse.

Well I swear mine has noticed I often go 3rd to 5th and its started telling me to do that some times, could this be true !

Pretty much.

I find it always wants me to change up way too early and if I obey it, the engine labours. So I never obey it, and I can still get great economy.
