Killed my gearbox...what are my options

Featured Replies

Morning all. Dif bearing collapsed the other day. all the abuse and something finally let go  as far as i can see these are my options...

1. Second hand box....could be poopty though so would rather avoid

2. Rebuild existing box, any idea of cost on this? anyone had it done? will ring round myself later on today...

3. LSD into it too....i don't really see it neccesary on a car that is a barge and doesn't get tracked though.....

4.Burn the car out :giggle:

second hand box easyier and dont cost alot

as for lsd imo transforms the car but costs £££

if you dont drive it hard or track t etc etc then no point

p.s i take it you wheel spin it alot?????

Being sensible, Option 1 or 4

If you drive it like you stole it, fit a diff ;)

be sods law fitting a second hand box and it going pop 6 months down the line though wouldn't it :wonder: yes the cars driven hard but i don't know if i could warrant the cost of an LSD as im considering flogging it next year

If the 2nd hand value of the car merits it, find a low-mileage replacement. That would be the sensible thing to do. Maybe then sell the car sooner rather than later.

If you were to fit a diff, would probably only be worth doing if keeping the car for a bit longer, and then breaking the car and sell as parts.

You would loose $ fitting a diff though, so only worth it if you're going to get the enjoyment from it.

2nd hand EHA gearbox seems the only sensible option.

Rebuilding it or fitting an LSD will cost enough to stop it being cost effective. What's the car worth? £2k ish...

It would be funny to find out how much Skoda charge for a new gearbox! You could battle for some fat discount maybe.

What about service/exchange gearbox companies?

If you can't find anything in the UK, try importing. I bought a Suzuki transfer box from Japan once. Was immaculate and dirt cheap at the time.

well my last turbo diesel's box went do the same lines, i just bought a gearbox from a golf tdi and took a chance at £150 and well it worked, so i was rather happy, took me like 2 hours over all to fit it myself, with the aid of 2 jacks, and that was my first time at tackling a job as such

get an other box, £200~300 from any one thats a decent bloke

Edit:

only problem i had was the reversing switch which i bodged

remember the cost and what was replaced?

Last car, so 2006, Seat Ibiza, strip box and rebuild with new bearings about £350 or recon box £500ish at the time. Had bearings done and traded in car 6 months/10k miles later without any problems.

The little VAG indie I used recommended them to me at the time.

Buy a second hand one for now to get you going, then you can rebuild your own one in your own time. Once fitted you can resell the one you bought.

Mine runs sweet, yours for £175. ;-)

gearbox with the code EHA....is that correct? i thought they were 02j or something

o2j is the model mate,

EHA is the gearing code.

all correct.

Get the clutch done at same time as iirc you were having slip? go for the SMF kit as its cheaper, specially if getting rid.

I personally could reccomend getting 2nd hand and even an LSD :giggle:

Love mine and even normal driving it makes a difference. or do I secretly rag mine? mmm dont think so but hey ho.

The boxes are pretty solid specially off a std car. if its been played with I would be a bit more thoughtfull as its been played with for a reason. I would sell mine but TBH if I did you could guarantee I would need it lol. Thinking of LSDing it and putting it back onposs with custom gearings in then flogging the Quaiffed one thats on there now. not sure yet.

Good luck mate, If you get rid of your car thoI would strip it, takes ages to get rid ofparts but worth it if you have time and space.

cheers for the info boys, will keep you updated

If it is the diff then you could just replace the diff on your std box.?

I saw a company in US selling LSD diff's for $300 for our cars. I am in Califiornia next week and may try to firm up somthing as i may go down this route with my set up.
