Weird noise from the drivers door/side

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

This is my 3rd month owning a Yeti 1.6 Tdi Greenline and I have already driven 7500km with it. Very pleased overall, especially with fuel economy which is fantastic !

However, one thing worries me and I am not sure If I should really be bothered with it: some weird noise/rattle which I think comes from the drivers door/window. It first appeared around 5000km and I can hear it usually only when I start the car and in low speed town driving - it dissapears completely on higher speeds and motorway driving.

I am dissapointed since I've read the very best for the Yeti's built quality (remember the impressive review by Clarckson...).

Anyone else had similar problems ?

I've search the forum for similar cases and read some of them but I couldn't really get an answer.

Thank you all for your time.

Is it a 'crackling' / 'rattling' sound from the windows ? Sounds like the car is falling apart ?

If it is I suffer from the same problem and it drives me mad. I took mine to Skoda and they applied a 'friction silicone spray' to the seals around the window and doors and it solved the problem for a 'whole' a week.

I have bought some 'Gummi Plege' as recommended on this site (arrived today)to see if that solves the problem.

I love the Yeti too, but build quality is not up to the standard of the Octavia. Squeaks, rattles and hums everywhere. The kids make less noise. Even the 'CD' player spins the disk (irritatingly) when the unit is turned off.

given that it's the same cd player in both cars I suspect you may have a faulty unit

No its not the same...in the yeti we have a Bolero whereas in the Octavia its just a normal single front loading CD player.

The Yeti Bolero unit is probably faulty as the CD will spin even when the ignition is turned off. The problem is that its intermittent (although its getting worse) so its difficult show them the problem unless it happens on the day when I take the car to the garage..and course all they are going to say is 'I can't find a problem sir'.

When I have solved the window noise (they did not solve that one), I will take the car back to get the CD player fixed / replaced....or maybe not.

Our Octavia is bulletproof the Yeti is not.

I wonder why the Octavia section is full of people complaining about faults in their cars, because by your comments they have NO problems?

Let's get this in perspective; you have two MINOR problems with your Yeti, neither of which affect the mechanical side. One is a rattle, yes annoying, but not life threatening, second is a CD unit that occasionally spins, again not life threatening.

Are you really trying to say that you have now found that the Yeti actually doesn't suit you, and you should have bought an Octavia, so are trying to find excuses?

And I'm sorry if that is blunt, but that is the way it reads to me.

Yes your right they are minor niggles, but to be fair I would prefer a mechanical problem. If the Turbo goes, or the exhaust falls off I go get it replaced under warranty. No problem.

The interior is very different. You see, not only do I have 'crackling windows' (which skoda have not resolved) and a malfunctioning CD player, the plastic between the the steering and the dash makes a terrible noise when turning on full lock (both ways)...that has just started in the last week. When the car has been left out in the sun, the dashboard on the passenger side squeaks/rubs annoyingly. It only stops when the car cools down. On the other hand, when the car is cold, the casing around the speedometer and rev counter squeak/rattle. In fact the car sounds like its done 300,000 kms. I have only done 10,000.

I cant go to skoda and say 'can I have a new interior please' ?

I have 150000 on the Octavia and can only say that the interior is still brand knew !

I am not Yeti bashing, as given the choice I would take Yeti every time...it truly is great fun. I am just really disappointed with the interior.

Sorry, I disagree.

My former Octavia was a good car (2006 2.0 TDi Elegance) but my Yeti is much, much better.

The only downside is boot space but that's because the Octavia is particularly good in that area - hatch or estate.

Build quality is much better on my Yeti and even at 2 years old with 27k miles it feels solid and is totally rattle free.

Have you checked the Yeti rear seat belts when they are not in use. There are little slots to hold the end of the belt on the side of the rear seats. Sometimes if they are not replaced (my kids are now trained) and they are loose, they can vibrate against the trim.

WRT the cracking noise, I mentioned to the dealer recently and they sent a bulletin to Skoda to see what they should do. Still waiting to hear back.

Well don't get a 1.2 Fabia!!

The "thing" I had on loan this last week was terrible, with more creaks, rattles and pops than any car should have. I would have understood it if it had been a high mileage garage hack, but it only had 3500 miles on it when I picked it up.

I even commented on it to the service manager when I gave it back.

Sounds like the O/P has a bad one-I have some occasional creaking from the drivers door which is sensitive to temperature and keep meaning to find the fix which some kind person posted here-I think it is to do with the fuse box cover?

Your dealer should take these faults seriously, if the dash has not been lined up 100% in assembly they should dismantle and carefully re-fit it.

There is a point where faults which don't affect functionality can annoy to the point of distraction.

I don't see how you can disagree! - the OP is relaying his experience which may not be the same as your experience in your Yeti but unless you also own/drive his then your can't 'disagree'. He is suggesting that his Octy is far better built than his Yeti, not that all Octys are better built than all Yeti's. For what its worth my Jan 2011 SM with just 5000miles is faultless and I feel sorry for the OP that he's having interior issues which can be a bugger to resolve and clearly it's (understandably in my opinion) spoiling his ownership. Scant help i know but at least he should realise through our feedback that his is far from typical.

Yes, that's it exactly !

And I am afraid the problem will increase since it started with the drivers door/windows which is the only one being used at the moment. With time is likely that the rest of the windows will follow.. :(

I am taking it tomorrow for an oil change and I will mention the problem to see if they can do anything about it but I am afraid that problems like that one cannot really be fixed.

Where did you buy the "Gummi Plege" from ?

Yes it affects all windows and in my case they all started to rattle on the same day. It did not happen gradually, just one day they all started rattling. There is a post on this forum where the problem seems also to affect the seals of the sunroof.

There is clearly a problem/issue with seals used on the YETI...and I think more and more people will start to suffer from it. My personal thinking is that the seals will need to be changed as lubricating them will only last so long.

In terms of Gummi Pflege, I brought mine from here autobritedirect (as recommended on this site) based in the UK. Cheap product but expensive for delivery to France and more so to Cyprus I should imagine.

I am going to Gummi pflege the whole car today and see what happens.

''I am going to Gummi pflege the whole car today and see what happens''.

Let us know how it affects the tyre grip

But my Yeti is more than two years old, is used every day and shows no signs of this whatsoever.

All the people on this forum suffering from this problem tend to be from hotter environments. India, Cyprus, France etc.

In my case, if the outside temperature is 32 degrees, in may courtyard (where the car is parked) the temperature can reach 40 degrees +..due to the white walls etc.

In early/middle September it was really hot here (28 degrees...35-40 degrees in the courtyard)and I remember on this day cleaning inside the car, leaving all the doors open ect. However, at night during this period temperatures would fall below freezing..I was wiping ice of the car. This is when the problem started.

This dramatic temperature change has caused the problem. Why I don't now. Something to do with the rubber heating up and then cooling too quickly...or something like that.
