Any LR Discovery 300TDi experts on here?

Featured Replies

Short story, I ran a Discovery out of diesel and like a moron kept trying to turn it over to get it to run as it cut out in a pretty dangerous spot and I wanted to move it off the carriageway.

Since had it recovered home and replaced the fuel filter, filled up with diesel, put in some fuel system cleaner, also put some intake system cleaner into the airbox.

But it still won't run properly, it will idle pretty well again now but if you rev the engine or try and accelerate hard it will be very slow and then at some random point will cut out, but start again fine.

Any ideas? Any tips on tests I can perform to work out what it might be?

You might have to get the air out of the injector feed(s).

I know they have the button on top of the lift pump to get the fuel up. But you've probably got a bit of air trapped somewhere.

I assume you've checked the fuel sedimenter to make sure it's not full of sludge?

It's attached to the chassis rail in front of the rear wheel.

I'd think that possibly some crud got into the injectors and is restricting the flow. Only real option in that case is to have them cleaned.

The Sedimenter would be my bet as well they are almost never changed on the big services as most people cant be bothered or just forget.

It can be bypassed as it dosnt really need it.

Be warned a lots of good advice but they will take the **** and give loads of abuse but most of them can take it as well.

I look after a fleet of landrover defender tdi's & when they get air in they can be a pig to re start, what i do is open the bleed screw on top of the filter & using the lift pump plunger i prime the system until a good flow of diesel comes out of the bleed screw, this will fill the sedimenter bowl & then the filter,i remove the sedimenter bowl every year & clean it out,you may have to crack open a fuel injector pipe to assist with getting it going now you have air in the system. If the vehicle was running fine before you ran out of fuel the injectors & fuel pump will be fine, all the muck sits in the bottom of the sedimenter bowl.

I think it is a different set up on defenders.

The sedimenter is at the rear of the vehicle on the Discoverys just in front of the fuel tank attached to the chassis it dosnt have one on the filter.

Sedementer is not part of the fuel filter, its mounted on the chassis,10mm headed bolt connects it to the housing with the pipes, been a while since i worked on a disco but would of thought its the same.

300TDi Disco and Defender are almost identical.
