Tail Lights in Red, Done!

Featured Replies

What I plan to do measure up and put the biggest one I can find in there, its because I dont want someone piling into the back of me thinking ive stopped. My indicator bulbs are 27 leds i think, so something around that figure would be good  If i recall the white leds have a higher lumens output compared to coloured ones :wonder:

The white LEDs do have a higher lumen's output compared to the colored ones, beware of some of the ones one ebay though, the best bet is to get them from www.ultraleds.co.uk thats where I get mine from now. Tried various others but they have not been bright enough and/or failed prematurely. Its taken me about a year to to but I now have changed every bulb to LEDs apart from the headlamp/fogs. BTW I use 4 27 led bulbs for my indicators in my rear lights and can't fault them.

Ultraleds are pretty good, got mine from HIDsdirect cant fault them yet.... All lights are LEDs :o wowser! I plan a few more but all this faffing around is killing me, had to send back a few sets of LEDs already because manufactures state 'Super Bright' but they aint half as bright as normal filaments

You know for your tail and stop lights, did you use red LEDs or Whites?

Here's a few pictures at night, not great pics mind. If you notice the number plate lights and interior lighting look dull because of the camera settings but the indicators can be clearly seen. Done the fronts as well as a comparison, they are tinted in light smoke lamin-x

I used red LEDs for the stop and tail lights they give a 'proper' red glow I did try white LEDs at first but it gave the reds a 'pink' faded look (like an old cars faded plastic lenses).

Looks a bit dim but that could be down to the camera settings, it is very hard to judge how bright they are just by looking at a picture

Quick tip to compensate for the lack of light output form the early LEDs that I used I reconfigured my tail lights as follows

5 Stop, 4 Indicators, 4 side, 4 reversing and 2 fog

Since then LEDs have got better, but I've kept the configuration the same, making it clearer for cars that are behind me to see what I am doing.

Basically I now have double the light area than before with about standard light output, making the car more visible but not blinding anyone.

What I can't stand is some of the newer cars with very bright LED stop lights (to compensate for their narrow viewing angle) blinding me when I am stopped behind them and they have there foot on the brake :swear:

Rant over

Good job

How did you do that? So your brake lights are also your side lights and vice versa, and double indicators? :o

Camera settings make them seem duller, if I did normal mode it would look like a mash of streaky light

5 Stop, 4 Indicators, 4 side, 4 reversing and 2 fog

Also interested in doing this as people are really blind nowadays, Im guessing they all use the same reflector locations..?

So what does it look like when you brake and indicate?

Or brake indicate while reversing?

Or fogs, brake and indicate?

I just posted some pics in Lukes thread here as he was asking the same thing but its not easy to do.

Thanks, I just found that too. Looking good!

I assume components used are a diodes and dual colour LEDs for reverse and signal lights?

Then link the brake lights to fogs with diodes? and half power to brake lights for side lights..?

Still interested in what it will look like when you reverse and have hazards on :D

To much work for me :( I'll keep mine seperate, looks like theres too much going there ;) Like a pub bandit :giggle:

Forgot to ask  are the front signals straight forward? Like that dark orange colour

Half right about the diodes and brakes/fogs, but I have added additional LEDs to the Lamp housing to provide side lights and reversing lights no dual colour LEDs are used.

When reversing with the hazards on (or indicating) you just get white then light amber then repeat again so the amber switches on as well as the white so it just gets a bit brighter amber/yellow

Straight swap though you will most probably have to fit load resistors to slow the flashing rate down.

Yeah, i'll put resistors in all my leds, cut the voltage down to suite the bulb, cant see them lasting long before they burn out
