Greener Vehicle Discount for Congestion Charge

Featured Replies

Hi all

This may not be useful at all, but I've been trying to find out how to register my Fabia GL2 for the low emissions exemption from the London congestion charge. Part of the problem was that it's not called an exemption, but rather the "greener vehicles discount", even though it's a 100% discount.

Anyway, now I've found it, I thought I would post links on here. I don't think these are anywhere else. Hope somebody finds it useful!

The main information on tfl.gov.uk: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/congestioncharging/6733.aspx

The application form: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/greener-vehicle-discount-application-form.pdf

Cheers

The only thing is that you need to pay a £10 per year registration fee, so you have to pay in order not to pay -money grabbing b*******s.

I work in central London but avoid the Congestion charge most of the time because I get to work before it starts and leave after it finishes, so far I've had to drive in London during the enforcement times twice -so I've saved myself £10.

I wonder if this will be updated soon, once Ev's are more popular I can just imagine all greenlines, blue motions, eco what evers will then be classed as dirty cars again.....:(

Do they calculate it on co2 brackets now? Ie ...

100 or less co2

110-100...

120-110...

And so on?

No, it's just exempt or not. I personally think there's a real risk derv's will be un-exempted, as there's a growing view that even at EU5 they spew out way too much (non-CO2) crap.

Well, even if they do un-exempt them, I'd hope that there will be a period of grace for pre-registered vehicles. All the fat cats who ran out and bought 50 grand Lexus RX400h tanks (my boss included) have been given another 2 years exemption if their vehicle was registered before the change to the charge being based on CO2 emissions -as opposed to having an automatic discount for having electric motors (in addition to a 3 litre V6 -and really high emissions)

I'd like to think that the DPF does something other than pay lip service to European legislation and reduce fuel economy.

It's all rubbish anyway -you can drive a G-Wizz round for free and be really smug about it, they use massive lead acid batteries, are produced unethically and are in my opinion dangerous as they are legally classed as an electric tricycle so don't have to conform to the same safety standards that cars do.

Quadricycles don't have to conform to the same safety standards as they don't go as fast. A 400kg G-wiz travelling at top speed of 80km/h has about one tenth of the energy of a 1200kg Fabia travelling at its top speed of 170km/h. This should make it much safer for other road users. Unfortunately if you are hit by an urban tank in one, they don't give you as much protection - but then again nor do bicycles or motorbikes.

That's very true but in busy city traffic everyone is going pretty much the same speed -I wouldn't want to be hit by a G-wiz or be in one and hit by something else for that matter. You'd probably be killed in either a Fabia or G-wiz in a collision at their respective top speeds. I used to cycle every day in central London traffic and have seen the severe chassis flex on those things -you can see the body panels going out of alignment as they go over bumps -if one hit a pedestrian or cyclist there are no crumple zones to protect them.

The "quadricycle" designation should be banned or safety rules brought up to the same standard as a normal car... With a pedestrian, cycle or scooter/motorbike there is always a good chance you can get yourself out of trouble... With a GWizz you are stuck and will get squashed as that unfortunate person did recently...

My GL1 isnt included in that list of exempt vehicles. In fact I think it chucks out more CO2 and particulates than a new bog standard 1.6CR. Yes my car is VERY fuel efficient but the DPF is really only there so they can call it a 'green' vehicle. My car is Euro 4 compliant same as any 1.4TDI. I have the option of removing the DPF if I so wished and returning to standard PD setup. I wont bother unless it gets problematic.

A few years down the line no doubt my tax will go from 20 quid a year to 2-300 because it doesnt have Euro 300 status or a government approved wotsit......

Well that's progress for you -I'm sure that in the future pretty much all internal combustion engines will have start stop fitted as standard. Correct me if I'm wrong but don't all diesels have DPFs these days 1.6cr included?

Yes they do. Any new model...or is it any new car? after a certain date. I am sure google will answer that. Anyone buys a new diesel now gets a DPF....whoopee.

EURO 5 regulation on particulates pretty much guarantees you have to have a DPF. Its now in force. My car only has to comply Euro 4......doesnt have a particulate requirement that demands a DPF

To drive into Frankfurt (and several other German cities) after 31 Dec 2011, you need a sticker to say your car is Euro4 or higher. For diesels this effectively means you have to have a particle filter, which neither of my current cars do as they were built before 2005. :(

So unless the Fabia arrives in time the kids will face an hour and a half on the trains and buses to get to school every day after Xmas!
