VRS TDi 170

Featured Replies

Hi guys I'm in the market for a vrs diesel and I'm wondering can anyone tell me the good and the bad stuff on these cars,iv hear they give trouble like oil cooler, chains, and injectors,iv also heard that from 07 > they had all these problems cured is this true and if so from what month or vin number did the good ones start?

Iv owned a lot of sports car s over the years mostly japs but I really like skoda lately! I'm a mechanic/ vehicle inspector by trade but iv just heard so many bad thinks about the vw 2.0 tdi engines and that there not near as good as the 1.9 tdi.

Also are these vrs diesels very quick and what mpg will u get?

Thanks in advance

David.

18 months in on a vrs TDI, 51k on the clock and no probs,

50-55mpg motorway driving, unreal pickup esp in third and fourth gear,

never have to add any oil normally, rear tyre wear/sawtooth wear is driving me crazy though :-(

That's great but urs in fairly new so u might have the revised engine if there was one,I'm looking for a 07 one so want to know what's problems I might be facing or really how people say that engine is not as good as the 1.9, my main concern is that the gears on the chain wear for the pump which can result in engine failure,I'm not fully up on these engines so that's why I need to know what to buy.

main one that seems to cause the problems is the 2.0 PD TDi the 2.0 CR TDi seems to be spot on so far personally id look for a 2.0CR or a 1.9PD TDi and forget the 2.0 PD. 2.0CR started late 2008 or early 2009 ish I think but I had 1.9pd in my fabia vrs remaped to 173bhp it was an awesome engine! New 2.0 CR's are a lot quieter and smoother and most people see better mpg than the previous one in Octavias. DPF issues tend to be the 2.0 weakness oil pump not heard any problems there ever!

This seems to come up time & again (!) but the Octavia 2.0 engines were never affected by this oil pump problem. It was only the versions of the 2.0 engine with balance shafts that destroy their oil pump drive. The Octavia 2.0 PD engines (along with the Golf & A3) weren't ever fitted with a balance shaft so don't have this oil pump issue. The affected cars tended to be mk1 Superb, Passat and some of the larger Audis.

My vrs cr is awesome

09 is to expensive for me,so basically the 2.0 pd in a 06-08 vrs is not a good engine so?

To be fair the PD170 isn't bad, I would personally much rather have a PD140 or PD170 in preference to some rival manufacturers common rail engines! The PD170's two main issues can be DPF problems, particularly if its doing loads of short journeys, and failed injectors. The injector fault isn't the expensive problem it once was as Skoda are increasingly prepared to replace the whole set free of charge on potentially affected cars.

Hello fellow countryman

I have a CR170 as well.

No issues.

What is your budget?

Budget in jan will be 10k , this new cr engine what's the difference than the pd?so the new model 09 has the cr ye?

My mate at work has a PD170 with over 70,000 on the clock as a company car. Its had no problems at all. It has good fuel economy with good performance. Its what made me buy one. I absolutely love them. They do hold their value.

I had a pd vrs and with 21k on the clock, after a blast to Cornwall from the north east, dpf went.

I have a cr now and the difference is massive, far, far better!

Plenty of them on Donedeal at the moment within your budget.

I would suggest you confer with members on vagdrivers.net as they might just know some of the history on some of those cars for sale.

I was in the same situation as you a month ago.

Bought this vRS PD 170 for £9.5K. One private owner from new, top spec, full Skoda service history. 35,000 miles, just had the cam belt done, new tie rod ends, an MOT and four new tyres before I bought it.

Would have liked a CR but out of my price range. The wife already has a 140 PD Scout and I love the torque that you get with the older PD engines so was more than happy to go for another PD.

Don't worry about reliability, they are a good engine.

I had my injectors replaced FOC by Skoda the week after I bought it. Nothing wrong with them but I knew Skoda were replacing them for nothing so had it done.

I see 55mpg on my 70 mile commute when driven at 70mph.

Love the car and its in the best colour too

To be honest I'm starting to get put off the pd vrs now looking at other forums too, people saying injectors and dpf giving huge problems and the injectors are 700€ each ;(

I have 07 for sale in the for sale section. Been a great car and you'll get it well within your budget.

ABS unit went last year and I got this replaced under warranty. No other issues and Ive ordered a new one so I havent been put off by the problem reports. Overall they are great reliable cars. :)

What's the pd140 engine like for reliability guys?

Bought it 2 Years ago, hunted for a good one. Its first owner used it solely for taking the kids to school, so only had 11,500 miles on it. I've put just under 30k on it in 2 years. I have a fabia VRS too now which gets the majority of the commuting miles on it. The Octy has only done 200 miles in the last 2-3 weeks.

What sort of money have u to get for it?

No worries

Don't worry about small mileage.

I put 19k kilometers on mine in 12 months. This is unusually high for me.

Next 12 month will only see around 6k

that would bring it to 25/26k in two years.= 15/16k miles.

I will be selling it then.

You will only get a DPF issue if you do lots of short journeys, which doesn't give the regen a chance to complete.

If you are doing high miles , i.e in excess of 15K pa, only then is it really worth looking at a modern Diesel, & even then you shouldnt have DPF issues, as doing this amount of miles you should be doing reasonably long journeys allowing the DPE regens to complete.

If youre doing lots of short journeys , or less than 15k miles - Dont buy a diesel.

Wherever you see complaints about the DPF, check out if the car is doing at least 1 long 35 - 40 min motorway journey a week, or of its lots of stop start short journeys, if the latter then there is the problem.

I know from experience with another brand.
