Heat gun on Fabia Scuttle?

Featured Replies

As above really..

Keep seeing on the net that a heat gun is the best way to restore faded plastic on a motor..

My Fabia is black, and as a result I can't help but notice that the scuttle is getting a wee bit grey as it approaches 7 years out in the open.

I'm gonna source a heat gun and give this a go, but wondered if anyone else had any experience of the technique?

I was also looking at it being done on mk3 GTi Anniversaries.... and now I want one, in silver.. lol! Soon as I'm back in the black ;)

I heard about the heatgun method.

Have a look a boiled linseed oil aswell, works a treat!

Yeah, the heatgun method works great. I used it on my old corsa a couple of times with great results. Be careful though and dont hold the gun too close or for too long as it'll melt the plastic! Ive also had very good results on faded plastic using a cloth a peanut butter.(Really)

I painted mine, always looks black now..lol

I use chemical guys tyre and trim gel.

Looks brand new after application and beads water for a

couple of months.

I also use it on the splitter and door handles, grille slats

and bumpstrips on the doors.

One of my favourite products.

The thing I like about the heat gun thinking is it's more of a restoration than covering it up for a while.

I love the peanut butter idea as well, seen that a few times now and it looks like it works just as well as the big name products..

The only problem with the Peanut butter idea is that I have quite a few cats around the neighbourhood.. and they already like the taste of my wax.. get the feeling that I'll have paw prints all over the bonnet if I try it.. lol.

Be very careful with a localised heat source anywhere near the edge of your windscreen (i.e. under the scuttle) You might be needed a new one if you aren't!

Good point,.. Might whip it off before hand then because It's already got a repaired chip.

Good idea. You'll need some new clips from the dealers. Only cost pence but they might not be a stock item. My mate took his off and couldn't believe the amount of cr@p underneat it. It looked like a silted up river delta. Good time to give it a clean and polish to protect it before putting it back on. Must get round to doing the wife's (or is that wife ;) )

I suspect the heat gun is just melting it, and when it re-solidifies it looks new. A similar thing happens if you use, I think, Xylene thinners. Probably easier to use a heat gun though.

Personally I would just spray it with some satin black paint, job done.

Ha! Found it! I knew I knew of something that works well.

You've gotta try this stuff! Back For Good

My mate used it on his Porsche and Fabia. Awesome stuff. He applied it about 2 years ago and it's still as good as it was back then. Pretty pricey and you don't get a lot, but as it lasts so long you wont be buying product for 2+ years or using your time to reapply every so often so worth it in the long run.

Don't use paint. Painted plastic looks pants unless it's done really well and sooner or later it WILL look pants.

Gotta be honest... At that price I'd rule out buying a new scuttle panel 1st!.. Hmmmm.. Actually... lol. Might just look it up anyway and see what it comes in at.

Anyone got access to find out before I ask a dealer?

A little goes a long way. A small pot should do the scuttle and the other trim bits as well.
