Had an interesting time in my local dealers today after seeing this post yesterday by user Lee

VAG Quantum Platinum 5W40 to the required (for the vRS) 502.00 specification and as per the Fabia Owners Manual.

I went into the parts department and waited for 20mins whilst the parts guy trawled the EKTA system trying to find the correct Quantum oil. In the end he went into the garage to ask the mechanics. He came back and said he'd got it and that it was £79 for 5ltrs. I was a little taken aback as the above quote/link had it at £28...he happened to mention "longlife" and i asked what the VW spec was on it...He confirmed my thought that it was VW 504. Now we all know that all vRS mk2's are on short interval services and should be on VW 502 spec and so I was a surprised there seemed to be some confusion by the garage, makes you wonder what is being put in your car at service time, if you don't supply it!!

PS the Quantum Platinum VW 502 specced oil is £23 inc at my dealers. BARGAIN!! I've ordered some, as I'm not forking out on a forty quid ago oil whilst my car sups it like there is no tomorrow until 10k!

Sadly it's like many subjects i.e. some so-called experts really don't know the facts.

As VW are the top-level umbrella company for Skoda & Seat I would hope mechanics at and parts people at these dealers would have some knowledge as the engines are shared across a number of platforms.

VW and skoda dealers are now phasing out the use of 502 spec oil and are now using the longlife oil regardless of service regime as it saves on having to order and store different types of oil. VW spec 504 or 507 for that matter is fine on short and longlife service interval.

I'm sure 504 and 507 are fine for short interval servicing but it is a case of overengineering as that oil is designed for longer service intervals and is therefore much more expensive. Willit actually add any real benefit for the massive additional cost?

LOL...er I'd better get an oil tanker full of the VW502 spec to get me through the next 8k, as there is a massive difference between the VW502/504 price...hmm it might save Skoda some logistical issues, but why use a 30k longlife oil when its changed every 10k. Are they reducing the price to match??

As posted above I was quoted £78 for VW504, £23 for VW502...er 200% price difference is MASSIVE in my books???

The point though is that Skoda dealers will charge you the VW price not the Smith and Allan price. Buy it from S&A but why go for the long life oil if it is not necessary and adds no value?

If the vRS is on fixed servicing then there's no reason to use the higher spec oil as any advantage will be negated by changing it earlier.

On cost basis alone 502.00 is easily sufficient. Perhaps if the car is used on track days, and therefore subjected to higher stresses, then 504.00 oil would be a good idea but any diligent owner would be checking other aspects of the car for such use regularly anyway.

Sorry fella...504.00 isn't as good as 502.00 for track days!

Oils meeting this specification should only be used in petrol engines. Recommended for those which are subject to arduous conditions. It must not be used for any engines with variable service intervals or any which are referred to under other specifications

Oils listed in this section meet the new VW 504.00 specification. These oils are suitable for all petrol engines with extended service intervals (30,000km or 2 years).

The VW 504 00 specification supercedes the VW 503 00 and VW 503.01 specifications. VW 504 00 oils are suitable for engines meeting the demands of Euro IV emissions standards.

I'll be sticking with 502.00 oil and will most likely change it more regularly than just once a year!

I agree, I've been in the trade over 40 years, having served an appenticeship, and have had difficulty in obtaining concise information about VW group oils during the last 3 or 4 years.

Same problem at Skoda dealer who presented me with Quantum 5w-40 when I'd asked for longlife for Fabia 2 1.6 petrol. When I queried it he revised information to 5w-30 longlife3 which, incidentally, was reasonably priced - 5 litres for less than 4 litres of Castrol Edge 5w-30.

I'm using Longlife3 5w-30 in Fabia 1 1.2HTP petrol, 5w-40 in Fabia 1 1.4 petrol and Longlife3 5w-30 in Fabia 2 1.6 petrol. Any advance on this info?
