MDI questions

Featured Replies

G'day boys and girls, more questions Im afraid, this time regarding my MDI options.

Firstly I understand that some dealers are reluctant to supply the MDI to USB cable that the brochure says comes with the car, is this correct?

Secondly, one of my options is just to use my iPod for music. Does it charge the iPod too? Can I use the stereo to control the iPod i.e. flick through the folders to select the songs I want, or do I need to control it through the iPod?

Also, what are my other options? I have read that alot of people on this site use the Seagate Goflex hard disk. Again, I take it the music can be controlled through the stereo controls? I also notice the 250GB has been discontinued and replaced with a 500GB (which seems a tad memory overkill as far as music goes), does anyone know if this has the same dimensions as the 250GB therefor fitting snuggly into place?

Thanks in advance for your advice, I can honestly say that I have never been this excited about getting a new car, and I'll probably have many more questions between now and next Wednesday.

I assume you can control the ipod from the steering wheel if you plug it into the MDI interface , but you definatly cant if you plug it into the AUX socket... its should charge from the MDI but again, it definatly wont from the AUX...

I use the 250gig goflex (you need to format it to FAT32) and its fantastic, fits perfectly,(you wouldnt even know its there, doesn't pose a target for theives) and I believe the 500 gig one is the same size, however I have three poeples computers full of music on mine, and I'm only up to 120 gig, so I would think you'd struggle to fill a 500 gig! lol.. but hell, why not? they are not expensive anyway.

I paid for my MDI cable, but that was before people were saying they should be free, so cant help you with that one :)

its good to get excited, why not? this car is my treat, my hobby, its the best car I've owned yet ;)

Have fun!

I ordered the MDI connection as an extra with my Superb Elegance, ordered in May. No leads came with car, dealer said there are not included and my brochure (early 2011) says that leads need to be purchased separately. I purchased a MDI/iPOD lead from ebay at about 1/4 cost of the VW/Skoda lead. I use an iPOD via the MDI and it charges the unit and I have full control through the Columbus unit. There is no need to use the iPOD controls.

I specified the Mini USB cable when I ordered the car to connect my Seagate Free Agent portable hardrive i.e. music library, to the sound system. It works a treat: quick to change tracks and always returns to the point of the last track played, even when the hard drive has been disconnected.

When the car arrived at the Dealers an iPod/Phone MDI cable was in the glovebox so the salesman said I might as well have that too! Both were completely free.

Joy.

Very true. I think this is very much a "horses for courses" situation depending on where folk have their music collections stored. At least the various MDI cables give you the opportunity to access it without the pain of transferring files to another media/device.
