Mad Suspension spring assistors

Featured Replies

After having them sat at home for a few months I've finally fitted my spring assisters. With my job I carry a boot full of drugs and other vet equipment so the back end is pretty well loaded.

The car now sits far better and wallows a lot less in corners. I've not had it unloaded yet to see if it sits a ridiculous way off the ground but so far so good.

The after picture has winter wheels on the car but the comparison between the front and rear wheels can be seen between the two pics.

Let me know if you want any more information

Probably OK for towing a caravan. With my Citroen it has self leveling suspension, so no problem, will have to see how my new Octavia 4x4 is when loaded. Will have 75kg noseweight on the towbar, a 13kg & 6kg bottles of gas, 25kg awning poles, BBQ, tray with food in and another with dog food, boots, rucksacks, 2 dog beds, 5 ltr of water, also trolley jack and a small tool kit. May help, will have to see; I thought the Scout and 4x4 had a stronger suspension?

Apparently they do ahve uprated suspension but not enough for the load I carry!

Still manage to get 48ish (computer) mpg!

What spring assistors did you use and where did you obtain them? Cost?

Might consider them for my Scout when I have all camping gear in, roof box, 2 kids and bikes on the back.

Were they easy to fit?

they are the progressive/helper springs detailed here

Same price as when i bought them a few months ago.

Fairly easy job but unbolting the lower suspension bolt was helped massively by an air gun (prob would be fine with a BIG spanner). The kit comes with pretty good instructions

Thanks for that, do you need a spring compression kit to do the work?

Also the site only lists 2009, 2010 Scouts but as yours in the pics is a pre-fl I take it they will fit the older models?

Thanks,

And.

no need for spring compressors. - as the wishbone (swingarm?) drops away (after unbolting the bottom mount) the spring virtually falls out!

Makes life easier if you can jack both sides of the car up and then use a third jack to control the wishbone arm as you unbolt the shock.

I think that the suspension on pre- and FL models is the same - just the lights and interior that changed AFAIK (and the haldex, but no change to the suspension)

Many thanks, will give these serious consideration.

Another one who can load up his caravan with gear, me, all I can carry in front locker is 6kg gas bottle, even then its a job to get it at 75klg on nose.

Guess who'll be getting the same prior to next summer's overseas trip....

Reverse rake fail on the one with the bikes. OP - needs more lows.

Spring assistors will do nothing to fix that, yes the rear suspension might no be so compressed but the frontend will still be in space since the weight on the back of the car is in excess of the maximum axle weight due to the pivot affect of the bike carrier.

For a second I thought someone was being very brave/stupid posting that on line.

Anyone use the optional raised floor for gun running?

You're right, but it'll be just 3 bikes and the 4th, now a larger model, will be going on the roof. Nose weight will still be <75kg and the box will be smaller (narrower) and lighter to allow bike #4 space on the roof.

No more...

They're on!

Dealer fitted them so no problem with Insurance company trying to sting me for a few more quid.

Car (unloaded) sits about 1cm higher at the rear than before, but no handling differences.

Loaded up it feels a slighlty firmer ride, but hardly noticeable except over the deeper potholes.

Hi all.

These springs on the Scout, are mounted inside the original ones or replace them?

Thanks.
