Alternator fail - replacemnt options

Featured Replies

The alternator on our Mk1 Fabia (2002) 1.9Tdi PD failed today - my wife was driving, and appaerently loads of lights (battery, ABS and powersteering, seatbelt etc)came on and wuuldn't start. Apparently the battery light has come on and then gone out a coupe of times this week, but because we are used to the powersteering warning coming on (since we got it) we sort of get used to warning lights! Anyway the car then wouldn't start. Recovery called, and jump started it, but voltage dropped away very quickly, and alternator failure diagnosed on these symtoms so far. Although I understand to check conecting cable to alternator for fail (- but not sure which is what!?) I am preparing for a replacement alternator.

It seeems I can get 70amp, 90amp and 120amp replacemnt alternators. Do I need to match that which was replaced or could I now upgtrade? We have always had the headlight flicker and intermittent power steering issues, so would like more charging capacity, but not sure if this would cause further issues.

Cheers,

Dan

Not too sure about you upgrading, but mine had problems with the power steering and lights flickering, diagnosed as a faulty alternator. Garage replace like for like and all my problems were sorted.
