Luna alloy wheels

Featured Replies

I am thinking of a S/H Superb and prefer the look of the Luna alloys to the standard Thermisto's

However I seem to recall that there has been problems with quality and buckling of the Luna's

Can anybody shed any light on this or point me to any previous posts. Thanks

Don't recall any threads re the Luna alloys - there were plenty of reports re the Limited Edition alloys on the LE vRS Octavias with this problem.

Regards

Quite a few Luna-Related comments re; not being as strong, and are prone to buckling, more than the Thermisto or Luxon wheels. - nothing has been proved tho as far as i am aware.

There have been previous posts about problems with Luna wheels buckling.

I have a CR170DSG Superb Elegance hatch with Luna wheels. It is now over 2 years old and I haven't had any problems with wheel buckling.

On the advice of the dealer, I run the tyres with 32 lbs/sq.in. front and rear rather than the pressures shown on the label in the fuel filler. With a heavier load in the boot I put the rear tyres up to 34.

The standard pressure shown on the label for the front equates to about 30.5 lbs/sq.in. which in my opinion will allow rim damage if you hit a pot hole. The higher pressure helps to prevent this, whilst in my opinion not affecting ride quality and improving turn in. The standard pressure for the rear tyres is about 35. The lower rear pressure stops the rear end from bouncing about and therefore helps directional stability on poorly surfaced roads, without putting the wheels at risk.

Exactly what does the label say for your car? I'd want to run them with more than that, I think. Currently I have a Vectra diesel with very similar kerbweight and I'm running at 34 all round which is half way between the min-max for loaded up to 3 people. Never had a problem with tyres wearing unevenly after 70k miles. 30.5psi sounds incredibly low for a car with a c.1600kg kerbweight. I have a CR170DSG estate on order so will be marginally heavier than yours especially once I've added a towbar.

I have purposely held off from posting until now as I have the Luna's on my Superb and have crashed through several potholes on our wonderful :dull: roads, well the Luna's have covered around 11k miles and i have just fitted my winter wheels and tyres on today, so I have had chance to clean them thoroughly and guess what .... they are as good as the day they left the factory , I have also gone through some potholes last winter on my old 16" winter wheels and tyres and the potholes felt nowhere near as bad as when on the 18" Luna's ..... BUT I have flat spotted one of the Audi alloys!.

Make of that what you will, but IMO they are no more susceptible to bending then any other OE alloy wheel.

Thanks for all the replies.

However, today, I have just bought a 2009 Superb 1.8TSi with Thermisto alloys -- more spokes to clean than Luna'semoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif
