Convienience module.....would this work?

Featured Replies

Hi, i have the usual water ingress problem with my 54 plate Superb which caused interior light failure etc. So far i have cut back all the nodes i could find and re-connected them without any success with the lights. I am therefore forced to believe its the convienience module. As this is an expensive item i would like to know if mine has actualy failed before i buy a new one. My idea is to source an old module from a scrap car and plug this in. I know that it wont be coded to my keys but would it still turn the lights on in the car when i open the door ( thus proving my module has failed). I could then buy a new one with confidence. If this idea would work does the module have to be from a Superb or could it come from a Passat, Audi A6 or any other model and could my keys be re-coded to a second hand module.

I know there's a lot to chew on there but any help is greatly appreciated, thankyou.

have you checked the loom in the rear left side of the car this part of the loom tends to cause the majority of light failures in the cabin. (see the thread on water ingress it shows the loom very well) I would also open the convenience module - if it is dry and there is no corrosion then It is unlikely to be the cause if it is wet and you replace it with one with the same part number then I think you will not need to reprogram. It is a case of trial and error

Hi, yes ive checked the rear part of the loom and cut and re-connected about 5 or more nodes there including a big 11 wire bugger. They all looked slightly corroded but not so much that you would think they have failed. The inside of the convienience module is bone dry and shows no sign of any previous water ingress. Like you say its trial and error but it seems its now about to get expensive.

With regard to the big bunch of wires in the rear which are connected togeather and are the lighting wires, How have you connected them? Did you clean the copper wires until they became a 'bright copper colour' before you connected them? Did you solder them which would have given the best connection? (and they will only solder together easily if these wires are properly clean).

I say this as mine looked ok when I got to them when I did my car. So you can image the disspaointment on my face when I got to this stage. However soldering them togeather worked. Note I also had to replace a section of the wire as it would not clean up for about 50cms!

I hope my experience may help you.

I only cut back the wires an inch or so and re-connected them via block connectors. I;m confident the connections are good but i'm no electrician and have limited car DIY experience especially on stuff like this. You say the 11 wire connection is the lights(interior?) and is the main culprit......do you know if there is any way of testing the circuit at the connection point so that i would know that power/a signal is reaching this point.

The way i cleaned them up was to cut the node off, strip all the wires back, twist them together carefully then connect them all in a block connector.....is this good enough do you think?

I would have considered this to have been ok. Howvever when I got to mine, they had been done as the photo below and looked ok but in fact didn't work. Hence I soldered them. I just wanted to point this out before you go spending money on a conveience module.

Here is the diagram from a passat. The joint with many wires connected in the middle is the same one on the superb, only the superb has more wires at the joint (as there are more lights). At the top of the diagram on the right is the plug connection on the convenice module.

If your stuck and would like to try the soldering method but cannot do it yourself, perhaps I could come next saturday and do it to see if it make any differences (if its dry and a cup of tea is included?)

There is no doubt about it this bunch of wires are a disaster like a lot of folk I had to go back to the loom several times to finally get it sorted my advice to you is buy yourself a small gas soldering kit it will cost you about £30 and is childs play to use this is the only permanent way to connect wires Another thing to check out is the plugs behind the Kick panel on the left side clean them and try to protect them from corrosion - at the minute I have an issue with the bonnet display light on the dash it doesn't come on when you open the bonnet but worse still if the oil light comes on it will not reset itself cause this is done by the bonnet switch -- seems the issue is a white plug behind this panel but short of replacing this plug I can't see an easy fix. So take a peek in there and if need be dry it out and spray it with an electrical contact cleaner it may save you a few problems further down the road

Hi, I'd snap your hand off at the chance of help. If its not going out of your way i'd be really grateful if you have the time to come round. Send me a PM with contact details and i will get the kettle ready.......just my luck if it rains!!!!
