buying a vrs

Featured Replies

:-)

I'm looking to buy a nice vrs, I've got around 3800-4000 to spend and have been looking for a while. Ive found a few but the only thing is, is the mileage, they are all around 100k :-(.

Could this be a problematic car to buy with that type of mileage?

What components start to go at that kind of mileage?

What is there to look for when looking to buy?

Thanks a lot. Oli

100k is young for these engines as long as its been looked after.

Look for FSH (skoda if poss) general condition of the car all around. People get scared of buying modified cars but tbh they are better looked after imo.

A thing I always look at when buying a car is tyres, I like to see matching tyres all around and generally a good make this shows the owner doesnt mind spending money on the car and isnt a budget motoring kinda person.

For 4k you should be getting a vRS with around 80k on it and about 53 - 54 reg.

As long as these are well serviced and not thrashed then 100k shouldn't be a bother. My brother has an estate fabia 1.9tdi and it has 105k on now with no major issues at all.

Ensure that cambelt and water pump have been changed and check when the work was done, a test drive would also show if there's any major problems.

Where in Shropshire are you located as well??

Cheers, yeah Ive been looking for FSH and if the cambelt has been done.

I've been looking for about a week and a half now and can only really find ones tht are around 100k that are in my price range and not to far to travel.

I kind of need one soon aswell , i haven't gt a car at the moment and I'm having to get lifts everywhere which I hate :-(.

I'm in telford, in a village near the wrekin.

Theres a few on autotrader with 60-80,000 miles for around £4k. The only things possibly needing attention would be clutch and turbo, but dont be put off by that, as much as everyone bangs on about them being the big expensive jobs but they arnt mega money.

You can check both fairly well either way.

Oh right, see I set my top limit to 4k and not much came up tbh.

Would remapping a 100k car be a problem?

I would only want a stage one I think, 170bhp is enough for a 20 year of like me :-).

No problems with remapping a 100k car mate I would just say be careful what map you get and where you get it from as some can be very harsh on the clutch

I had unit 18 map my 120,000 miler with no issues.

If you had 6k you could have mine 68 on the clock remap performance clutch only 10000 miles ago, cam belt water pump recently changed you know you want to!

So its not a problem to map a 100k car!?! I would just get worried and hope it doesn't break or blow up on me :-(.

Matt: excuse my lack of knowledge but wats a unit 18 map?

James: I really would love it but its a bit of a struggle to get 4000 together tbh :'-(.

Unit 18 are a small garage, they are sponsors on here, they have built my car.

Worst that'll happen is a turbo going, £100 for a used turbo & £120 fitting so it's not massive amounts. The engines themselves are solid.

£100 for a second hand turbo? Really?

TBH I wouldn't even risk it.

To the OP:

My vRS is just about to tick over to 100k and it feels like it's just about run in. :)

My fabia's turbo went at 123,000 so to get it going again I stuck one wardy was selling on here, done perfectly fine until I went hybrid. I also sold a spare I had on eBay for £82.

Make sure the rest of the car is in order first before mapping, brakes, bushes, mountings all wear out due to the heavy nature of the engine and box

People look at mileage as if it's some form of magic parametric. It's clearly not. A turbo could go at 10,000 miles if the car has been used for short trips and ragged from cold. The problem with turbos and clutches (and I'm sure that Tech1e will correct me if I'm wrong here) is that they get worked MUCH harder after a remap. So something that would have lasted another 30,000 miles will suddenly let go. And, once you have the extra torque it's very hard not to use it, so you put extra stress on EVERYTHING.

If you are buying a used car you should always start with the premise that you are buying a car that someone with more money than you no longer wants. As someone at an auction once told me, "What do you expect? It's someone's old rubbish".

Buy a car on condition (not mileage) and budget for anything you think could go wrong. On a 100,000 mile car I'd be budgetting £600-£800 for a turbo (might as well buy a hybrid), £450 for a new standard clutch, £600 for suspension/bushes and £300 for brakes.

So if you have budget of £4000 I'd be looking to spend about £2500 on the car and £1500 putting it right. And then £400 on a Shark map. Far too many people buy two digits on a numberplate. A newer car is not always a better car. The AA do decent warranties on cars up to 10 years old and 100,000 miles. And by decent, I mean they actually pay out if anything goes wrong.

If you can, get someone who REALLY knows what they are looking at to go along with you. If you can't, get you mum or girlfriend to go with you and ask them to look at it VERY critically. I find women usually spot things very quickly that men ignore as they sucked in my the general shineyness of it all.

I'm in Telford.

Small world, me too :p

Thanks a lot every1.

I'll look out for what you've all said. And listen for any untoward knocks etc when on a test drive.

Is there anything obvious that I can spot that would go at around that mileage or is it just turbo etc?

Should be looking at one on Saturday, eeek, really excited.

Fabia_19: sure is! I'll give a flash if I see u on the roads if I get this one on Saturday. what u driving?

I'm in Wellington a fair bit so that's over your neck of the woods!
