Columbus Maps OK, Travel Times & Routes chosen a bit odd

Featured Replies

Does anyone else have issues with the routes and travel times chosen by the Columbus unit?

Example Took my son to a rugby away game at Leeds (he plays for Middlebrough Colts) at the weekend and the route specified to go was 5 miles longer than the return journey it specified. Google Maps showed only the shorter version.

Even worse example is entering the destination as Dundee, from Middlesbrough. Even choosing the 3 alternative routes option it does not choose the A1 via Berwick as an option when this is both the shortest and the fastest route.

Another bugbear is that it calculates the remaining travel time based on distance remaining divided by the average / max speed of the journey so far. Does not take into account the speed limits of the remaining roads. Does anyone else find this annoying?

You can adjust how the remaining time is calculated, there is a setting in the columbus menu. These calculations are not based on speed limits or average / max speed of the journey so far, they are based on the same assumptions that google et al use. eg. Motorway=70 , A road = 60, B road = 60, local roads = 30. This is where the problem lies though, as it assumes even dual carriageway A roads are 60 when in fact most are 70, so if I drive from Stevenage to Blandford in Dorset as I drive along the A31 my ETA reduces quiet considerably as I am travelling faster than 60. This is also why some strange routes can be selected, and you could find yourself running on a single carriageway A road when a dual carriageway would have been faster, albeit longer.

My TomTom did/does the same - always suggests one way to my folks house (Scarborough from Leeds) and back another way with absolutely no logic at all as to why the difference.

I still have my TomTom and 3 days ago just out of interest took it as well as using the Columbus on a journey through Leeds to a road I wasn't familiar with. The TomTom suggested a route I would probably have guessed at, but the Columbus took me another way which I think was quicker and better.

The downsides of the Columbus are no speed camera alerts and no quarterly map updates.

Overall its a neat bit of kit though. Just not sure how to approach the map updates - are the Skoda prices similar to the TomTom subscription? Certainly more hassle if you have to get a dealer to do the updates rather than just plugging in to your PC.
