Powerflex or not ?

Featured Replies

After some answers in a previous thread it has been suggested the cause of my problems are the lower wishbone bushes.

So I am going to replace them and see if it solves it.

One of my questions is should I replace with powerflex polybushes or not (will fit complete kit front & rear). My vRS is a daily commuter and I dont want to make the ride much harsher, but on the flip side it could do with being a little stiffer.

So do polybushes make the car a lot stiffer, increase road noise, and send judders up your spine with the smallest bump or is it a noticible differance but well within tolerant levels.

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers.

Its all to do with the shore rating which is how the stiffness is

measured.

Powerflex are harder than super pro from what I've

read. The Superpro ones are supposed to be slightly

different to other types as well resulting in a slightly

different geometry arrangement which is said to prevent wheel hop.

Fabdavrav is a big fan and far more knowledgeable on the subject

than I am, give him a PM and I'm sure he'll be happy to explain better.

Ibiza cupra ones are solid and about £7 each. More than adequate

I heard some one call my name........... :giggle:

Although I have Powerflex.......I would prefer to have Superpro...knowing what I now know......There is a problem with the front wishbone, front pivot bush (not Powerflexs fault).....so I think the Superpro one is better....as for the Front wishbone Console bush...either leave the console insitu and fit (by hand) the Powerflex ones or use a press (might have to remove the console...but can be done insitu)...and fit the Superpro one........and the rear beam axle main pivot bush...defo fit the Superpro one as a two piece and alot easier to fit than the Powerflex one!!!!..ARB saddle bushes...either make doesn't matter!!!!

Anything else????? B)

Thanks for the info and thread link, most useful. Just some questions, is the ride a lot stiffer i.e backbreaking and is there an increase in roadnoise. Cheers

Stiffer...no.....more controlled....the bushes allow unrestriced (more than the OEM) movemont in the planes that we want (defo on the console bush)....but restrict more in the other planes........as for noise.......no....if you want more noise and vibration fit the OEM console bushes (solid type) from a Cupra.... :giggle:

P.S. you will see in my info post the spec on the "offset" console bush...very good if you have lowered car and stiff suspension.... B)

What's the fix for the front Powerflex bush you mention in the post?

What's the fix for the front Powerflex bush you mention in the post?

As the s/s tube had eaten into the steel subframe (at the front of the car)...what I did was get a thick stainless steel repair/penny washer of the size smaller than the bolt...then cut a thread through the washer for bolt (makes a tight fit over shank)....then slacken off the bolts for the subframe as per my post

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/165720-fabia-nut-and-bolt-tightening-torques/page__view__findpost__p__2314024

Then remove the front pivot bolt and slide the washer between the subframe and the pivot bush (coppergrease the bush side of the washer)...then retighten up the bolts etc as per my post

the car was at dealers for some work (rare occasion as just had back problems) and they didn't torque up the bolts..so everything was a bit loose...they got a rocket)

You mention might having to remove the console to fit the Superpro bushes. Is this an easy job to remove?

Cheers

I have powerflex front wishbone and cupra console bushes and I have no complaints! Very good on the road no increased noise or harshness.

Feels like a new car now with lots more control up front.

PS I fitted FARB bushes too (powerflex)

I have the same setup apart from the FARB bushes and my cars lowered on eibach springs. I also have no complaints at all. No more noise or bumpiness!

Never done it myself....but two large bolts and two small bolts....and slide it out........BUT there are people who have done it insitu using a made up puller of large threaded rod, nuts, washers, plates, etc to pull it into the console... B)

The arms come out fairly easily but normally you have to twist the arm out of the rear bush which destroys it. The old bush has then to be cut out and the new one has to be pressed in with the above tool if its a cupra bush. The powerflex ones are a lot easier to get in if in situ but dont know about the superpro ones.

Wakey...Wakey.....

I was replying to Hungery Horace's question about "is it easy to remove the console units"..........not "how easy is it the fit a console bush"..... :wonder:

:giggle:

P.S......I have removed the arms.......several times for various things.........and as I have stated before the Powerflex are the easyest to do by hand (no tools)........but all the others require tools to fit (made up pullers).........or remove the console unit and fit the bush using a hydralic press....

Remove the console and press bush it, it took alot of messing about using the large washer and bolt method and it was a pig todo

Removing the console assembly is quite easy. Then take the whole thing including wishbone to skoda and get them to push old bush and fit new one in. Also get them to fit the wishbone back. Then refit the whole assembly.

Cost me about £50-60 for skoda to do it while I waited.

Should you get your wheel alignment done after fitting console bushes ??

Buddy, from my experience, I also travel around 16000 miles a year in my Fabia. My bush's started going in August and I got them replaced in October along with two new wish bones ( advised by mechanic as the ball joint should be replaced to stop the problem dead) I brought my wishbones and bush's and they were fitted in 2 hours. I went for the power flex option it's soo smooth and not noticeable ( from country road to motor way)

Bush's were £50 and wish bones 40 each from Essex motor factors

EErrrrrrrr.......the bottom wishbone to hub carrier ball joint is a sepearate item and is available as such....no need to get a whole wishbone.....just three smallish bolts hold it on to the wishbone... B)

Yeah I know it is, but would you want to take the wheel of the car again, when you can replace it all at once at not great cost

I know we are going slightly off-topic, but I think the ball joint is riveted to the wishbone and when my local garage replace it, they replaced the whole wishbone.

Going back to bushes, I was thinking of replacing mine with the new Powerflex ones, however I've read they don't last long because they are a 2 piece bush.

Nope, ball joint is held in place with 3 bolts.

You think wrong my friend.........costly mistake!!!
